Dear Loga,

US's forex reserve consists of non USD currencies and especially EURO, GBP and Yen, which are not much in vogue. US and most of the world make international deals in USD which is the local currency of USA. So they do not need a dollar reserve. Hope I was clear.

India can never become innovative
by Indian citizen on Aug 05, 2009 04:15 AM  | Hide replies

India can never become innovative because of the corrupt people. All we do is boasting and comparision with in the society. The major plaugue to India Caste. Unless caste system is removed Indian can never ever dream of becoming a one in innovative countries list.

I studied in Siddharda college , Vijayawada. In the classroom Kamma caste(College owner caste) occupy first 3 rows and upper caste and then BC and SC/ST should sit in the last rows without questioning any one, Unfortunatley even the Kamma lecturers openly support that .Such a shame and All the shameless creatures brag about this so called superiority with in the society. Unless caste system dies in india , we fail as a nation in every aspect.

There are nearly 70 sects (caste) among Muslims and nearly >100 among Christians, all over the world. With the help of some politicians, the caste systems among Hindus only
made as a subject for discussion.

Dont give direct negative statements like it will never happen in India,do you have any idea what we were in past. We were best in all fields medicine, astronomy, maths & even making humans disciplined upto 1000 AD.As every civilisation had ups & down ,next started stupid wars & discriminations because of all intrusions from all sides of country then lead to confusion in all the systems. After arrival of british, they created confusion & battles which changed our gold minds to scrap & slaves. After 1947 we faced lot of famines & were directed our vision to agriculture which was only labor oriented no concentration of efforts over literacy. But after all these problems we raised to this 8% GDP growth NOW ALL WORLD ONLY THINKING OF CHINA & INDIA. NEVER THINK ALL WILL HAPPEN IN SECONDS, STRONG RESULTS NEED GOOD PLAN, SINCERE EFFORTS & SOME TIME.Now we need to maintain peace, improve literacy, have confidence & some money to get raised to become INDIA developed in all aspects.- Kiran kumar

no man...it takes innovation to do jugaad. Eg:- No toilet? Innovation: Use existing footpaths. Other countries will be flummoxed by these issues. If there is a nuclear fallout, only Indians and cockroaches will survive...

Sweden as an Innovative Nation!
by kabs on Aug 05, 2009 01:11 AM  | Hide replies

I fully agree for this Scandinavian Country of 9 Million population. In terms of Industry they have Ericsson ( No.1 in Mobile Infrastructure) , IKEA ( No.1 in Home to any furnishing), SKF ( Ball Bearing Company), ABB !

Also you would be aware of NOBLE prize, Sir Alfred Noble who invented the dynamite.

The reason behind this is Sweden has one of the worlds best Social systems with an average of 5 weeks of vacation. Its the best place in the world to bring up Children with free education in School & College. Hospitals & Medicine is almost free..
The Education system is prety good with very much logical thinking no craming..

Government gives lots of grants to research universities.

We have students from India & China coming in to Sweden for their higher studies

Also like to add that in India we woul burn out by 45-50 years by working 10-12 hours daily. Here in Sweden you are fresh and sharp , you can see people running at age of 80 years.
Also important to note is you clean , wash & iron your own clothes, clean house.

Its highly taxable country ( 45 - 55%) for people earning more. No discrimination in the system.....'

Interesting
by Vagabond on Aug 04, 2009 10:20 PM

It indeed an interesting article about a study (leaving the semantics aside). Can rediff direct us to the legitimate (not pirated) source of that report (URL/Download/FTP etc) if it is available online ? Really curious on the number of patents awarded to iceland and Singapore vis-a-vis US and Germany. So also the extent of technology transfer that took place in these countries vis-a-vis the rest, 'other RnD results' etc.

Is it not IMPLIED that when you are at 27, you are not in top 10 ?

I think rediff's strategy is employ sensational headlines to lure people on to detail story, which may or may not be meaningful. But seeing the number of comments, I have to say that it works.

This is what happens.
by Vagabond on Aug 04, 2009 09:26 PM

How the heck did GDP and unemployment sneaked into INNOVATION? I mean it looks like the data is plagiarized from either 'Nation master website' or some 'CIA fact file data sheet' about countries and ran through some primitive spreadsheet program. The question is , is this article is about countries which are 'least affected by recession' ? or do you really mean 'Innovative nations'?

The study by BCG, TMI and NaM clearly seem to have an objective of 'human talent' migration. How come it suddenly became 'MOST INNOVATIVE' nations ?

And WTF ? Singapore is the dream destination for innovation ? God bless you for not choosing Myanmar or Cuba.

Do(es) the moron(s) who compiled this information (lifted this info from some place) understand what is the definition of Invention or Innovation and hence what makes an innovative countries ?

Even considering for a moment that iceland and Switzerland have all the attributes, will they welcome talent from Asian nations ? As the opening statement of the article claim?

My advise is , don's smoke pot and resort to writing these articles which heavily depend on facts. It is not like you report 'Rakhee Swayamwar' or 'Some wardrobe malfunction during fashion parage'. If you are not sure, DON'T publish under some idiotic headlines.
