It's an interesting article. Another Economics' Nobel for an Indian in the near future is a distinct possibility.
In fact, Indians actually deserved many more Nobel Awards in all the selected areas (Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economics) than what they received so far.
It's hoped that the Awards Committee will correct past mistakes to recognize the true talent and path-breaking inventions,
initiatives and intellectual and humane endeavours to promote peace, progress and prosperity of the humanity at large.
I have noticed people here are more engaged with again ‘Indian’ versus ‘West’, rather than looking into the work of Prof Jagdish. Not to deny, I was happy and also intrigued to know about the Indian candidate for the Nobel. But to me, Prof Jagdish reflects more of American sentiments and logic, than any of India’s, advocating ‘free market’ primarily. In this era of neoliberal globalisation, if people like Prof Jagdish would not compete for such prize, I wonder who else will!!!

Because India is always short of heroes, be it any field. So we have to applaud a Sunita Williams and other NRI's. That is our country's fate.
It is sure that any one who finds a medicine to cure virus like HIV or cure STDs permanently would definitely receive a nobel prize in health science. Scientists and researchers, please try to achieve that.

son of a gun jaichand is a real brilliant guy. hats off for calling a spade a spade, and a short, dark, weak, insecure, arrogant guy and indian!! keep it up jaichand. wanna hear more of your gyan.
Other than perhaps in literature, nobel award has got a direct link with the quality of research facilities available to the aspirants. Quality of research facilities again directly varies with the economic well being (GDP) of the country. No wonder most of the nobel prize winners are from USA irrespective of the individual identities of the prize recepients as to where they originally hail from. It is baseless to identify a nobel prize winner as citizen of any other country other than the country where he could do his research work.
It is really heartening to know that Mr.Bhagawati will soon be receiving the Nobel award. As an Indian it is a matter of pride that we are not far behind many developed countries in terms of producing eminent scientists, economists and literates.
This is a refreshing news after so many days that the headlines have been occupied by serial bomb explosions.
Let us hope he bags the award. Good luck professor

I cannot undestand what you are talking about ?
USA 320 Nobels
Germany 70 Nobels
Australia 12 Nobels
Great Britain 100 Nobels
India 7
Such arrogant attitude even with being nobodies can come only from Indians in particular.
How to find an Indian in your office ? Find the most brooding, frowning, and a man having deep inferiority complex reflected in self praising dialogues and you will see an Indian or yourself in mirror.

incidentally, one would also find that the most brooding, frowning man is the most logical, smart and probably the type that adds value to the company...

By your logic Americans who won 320 nobels should be hyper arrogant and so should be Mr bill gates and Warren buffet ..... they are every so humble dont you see them. no hint of arrogance.
Indians have definately a whole gene of ARROGANCE in them, in reality it is a inferiority complex.
That boxer vijender said he could defeate mohammad ali and mike tyson at once at the same time, when he won an olympic bronze. Such arrogance is uncalled for.

Winning a particular Prize depends on opportunity and grooming. Moreover, all those who won NP in America might have come from different nationality.
Most of them are jews and Germans, collected by Americans after World War II.

So what is YOUR problem, They ARE Americans finally. and btw did you do any research that they are ONLY jews and Germans ?
In the last 7 years 20 Americans have won Nobels, no of them is a German or a Jew.
I was making a point about arrogance not your stupid argument. What are you trying to prove ? UR POINT ?

nobel prize is definitely a great honour, but look at the history of the countries from which the laurettes have come from...
india has been crippled under foreign ruly and it is not easy to come back with a bang...
in spite of adversities, the average indian has come a long way to challenge those who were once the rulers (read as looters also) of india...
have patience... do not make unfair comparisons...
See Indian IT industry sitting on a fat cash of $40 billion made using cheap labour, what have they INVENTED in the last 10 years ?
BTW British went 60 years ago and look at the countries like Japan, Germany, Taiwan, China , South Korea, etc which were TOTALLY destroyed by the war stand today and then look at India which had biggest Industrial base in Asia in 1948 stand today.

on the same, i do agree that some degree of arrogance springs from inferiority complex... but how does this complex arise?
the truth is that every indian is brainwashed to believe that anything indian is shit and only the western is good... hence the eagerness to discard indianness and to grasp the western in language, dress, conduct, manners and culture...
obviously, such guys when faced with brits or americans look down on themselves and it evolves on the lines of master-slave relationship...
so, it is mere power psychology... if a situation arises when whites have to earn their bread in india... then the most brooding, most irritable, arrogant, least sensitive and of course white fellow would the the brit or the american...

hey sesh ur point is very true and not many people realise the complexity of this issue,,,,every bit of out thinking is handicapped by english and westernisation.
not many people understand the consequences of lingual and cultural imperialisation/dominance . they simply think west is better because of their technological advancements.but dont inderstand why such advancements HAD to happen there.

For God's sake, stop this self-praising nonsense. Bhagwati is Indian only by race or origin. He studied and worked in the US, and is an American citizen. It shows India's weakness rather than strength that people born in this country have to go abroad to shine. So if Bhagwati wins, it is not exactly a matter of national pride.
