Somebody should tell Rediff editors that there is no such thing as noble prize in economics. the award that is being talked about is actually given by the Swedish central bank. It has nothing to do with Noble prize.

The Nobel Prize
Every year since 1901 the Nobel Prize has been awarded for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and for peace. The Nobel Prize is an international award administered by the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden. In 1968, Sveriges Riksbank established The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, founder of the Nobel Prize. Each prize consists of a medal, personal diploma, and a cash award.

The noble prize in economics is not given by the nobel foundation but by the Swedish Central bank. Nobel foundation has disowned that prize.

Persons with anti- Indian heart should not get Noble prize . The noble Prize winner should have Indian heart and neead not be Indian resident or Indian. If the persons who want to make India weak with their arguments like "India should decrease its defence budget and army" should not get noble prize . If such person gets Noble prize there is no meaning in feeling Proud.

It is like Miss World contest !

Beauty pagent and Miss world contest held and sponsered by MNCs selling beauty products will decided who should be the next Miss World. This depend on where they can market their new ideas and oodies and where the 'purchase power' lies. Likewise there is a lot of lobbying goes behind these Nobel prices. See who all got Nobel Peace prices? In anyway, If an Indian (Real Indian) who lives and educated here gets it, we can all be proud of it.

Why can't you be proud of an Indian living abroad, receiving the Nobel? No doubt, there's a lot of lobbying politics which decide the ultimate award but we tend to overlook one very important thing- one needs to do something exceptional just to be nominated. I've had the privilege of meeting Mr Bhagwati in person wen he flew down from the states for my college convocation. He's as normal and down to earth as anybody- the only stand out factor is that his brain is better than most's. I've also read Avinash Dixit's work on game theory and I believe he should've got the nobel a long time ago. Does it really matter if they aren't residing in India? Plus they aren't being nominated for the Nobel for public work, so where does the question of doing something for the country's poor arise from?

I am not at all averse to an Indian living abroad getting it but I said I will be proud if it a person living here in India. See the reason is that with limited facilities our country offers comparing to other developed countries, it is a herculian task to get one who lives here. That is the only reason. Won't you be happy if your brother gets a price rather than your neighbour? It is just natural.

And what's wrong with capitalism? It's the only system that's proven to work... which country is still commie? USSR is dead, china is commie only in name, europe is trying to be less socialist... Despite all flaws, capitalism is the only system that works, and will continue to work, blips like the great depression or this sub-prime crisis notwithstanding.

Gerard, wake up! the reality is that communism destroyed this world far more than any religious fundamentalism has done!! 12 million Russians died to atone for Stalin's sins, another couple of millions have been dying in China, Vietnam, Cuba, Latin america and so on. Communism is just name sake. the scourge of Stalin and his legacy are being trampled upon. The first country to follow the suit was China. the death of Castro will make Cuba emerge as a capitalist country. While Capitalism the world over has contributed tremendously to alleviation of poverty, communism has distibutd poverty and misery evenly!! God forbid, communism murdabad!!

Namesake Indian
by Guest on Sep 24, 2008 11:17 AM  Permalink  | Hide replies

I would be happy if an Indian staying in India working for India wins a Noble prize rather than the one staying in USA/UK & preaching India what to do & what not to do.Prominent example is Amartya Sen!!

I completely agree with you. I need a person 'born in India, brought up in India, Educated in India' bagging nobel award based on his/her work in India. Only then I will feel a sense of pride. It will prove that ultimately our own systems have proven themselves on the world stage. Till then let's feel pseudo-satisfaction from these type of news.

Uhm, Amartya sen was a cambridge educated economist. He taught in Jadhavpur univ for sometime, then in Cambridge, Oxford and now harvard. He's been everywhere, so he's not staying only in India and working only for India.

Sure, name 5. Never mind a dozen, just name 5 and give me what their contribution was. Making hollow claims doesn't make it true unless you can back it up with hard data. Lets see what your hard data is!
