Yes we need more IITs. India needs one each in Punjab, Rajasthan, MP, AP, Karnataka.
U.P. has two - Kanpur and BHU Uttaranchal has one - Roorkee East has two - Kgp and Guwahati South only has one Central part of India does not have any IIT.
hello friends, i don't think at present we need more than seven iit's. if we will increase it's no. to 12 or so, the resources(money, man(good prof's)) available to each iit will get reduce, the result will be dilution of technology, so at the cost of quality we should not increase quantity, particularly in education..
see there was another concept also, that iit's will become research institute, and rec's to iit's. if that thing is in their(government) mind then it's ok.....beco'z naam mein kya rakha he, kam dekho(what is their in name, see the work!!!!) thanx for reading ravneet

I disagree with your views with due respect. We dont lack profs and skilled staff. Infact in foreign countries many Indians who are serving to foreign institutions are very much eager to come back to India and serve here in good reputed institutions like IITs. Now we have better economy so we need to invest healthy funding in hi-tech education which will inturn be very advantageous to the progress of country.
We need more IITs because IIT is one of best Indian brand which is known now days all over world. In US when people talks about Indian Technology the very first name come in American counter part is IIT.We need more and more good students which can make India feel good. As far as people talk about that 80% IITians come here in US and then they waste Indian government money I think that is a very bad thinking because only of those IIT people name in US, US and other big countries are coming to India and opening companies and giving jobs to million of Indian. I also love my country like other Indians do and I am here to make big name of India and provide as much help to my best Indian.
Our Honarable President had come to IIT Bombay once and when one typical IITian asked him how he was trying to stop the "cream of India- the IITians" from leaving the country for jobs. He replied - "Let them go. We have our thousands and thousands of Science, Arts and Commerce graduates coming out from other so many institutes of India. Those are our gems. They will work for India." I was glad our President gave a good reply. He realises that its not IITs which are only good, as is the hype created. IIT students work hard and hence they are good. Professors (except few, who are good) have no work there to do, as the students can and do learn everything on their own.
Its nice that Mr. Joshi is interested in improving the quality of education. But not by naming more institutions as IITs will the quality improve.
He can do it by
1.teaching human values to all people in educational institutions. IIT Professors are so busy in making money and in getting fame, they are badly lacking human values. I strongly suggest Mr. Joshi take some concrete steps about it.
2.Making the educational institutions more transparent, so that demoralising elements are eliminated.
Having the facilities which IIT has, to be present in more colleges is good.
i am student of IIT. And I wish to say just two things.
1. IIT professors have no time to guide PhD students. Hence even if number of IITs are increased, please take out the PhD programme from IITs. Professors are just not able to handle PhD programmes.
2. As students go through evaluation regularly, let Professors too have some evaluation scheme, such that those who are not able to manage work due to some reasons, are not given load. This will help both them as well as students. Students in IITs badly suffer due to the Professor's badly managing their work and time.
My own experience (as well as most of my colleages and seniros and juniors) is that teachers in colleges other than IITs are much much more sincere and dedicated than teachers in IITs.
Facilities (lab, internet and library) in IITs is the only thing which helps a student work well.
Most of the Professors have no idea what they want in life. Instead of having student's wellwishing as one of their aims, only aim of them is to get fame and money.
Sticking the label of IIT to other institutions without significant upgradation of entry procedure and infrastructure will lead to no good. Its not the label of IIT that has worked in their case but the entry procedure ie JEE. So many IITs are creating confusion as to which one is good and which one are not. Yes! this is happening, I am myself a IIT KGP ian and umpteen professors from different countries have asked me this question that it is very difficult for them to decide that which one is good and which oen is not.
In pursuance of the current policy IIT will no longer be a brand name.
No i do not think that creation of more noumber of IITs will dilute their exclusiveness, instead it will groom many more talented young brains of our country.Considering the size and population of our country we need atleast 30 to 40 IITs but sadly that is not popssible at the moment.See how many Big and well equipped Universities are there in America? Can we ever dream to compete with those Universities with our 12 IITs? No,even IITs lag in the cutting edge research quality which is going on in American Universities.
Yes, Ideally, one in each state but the the bottomline remains whether we can stop our good people serving the west and west creating low tech jobs like call centres in India. Our scientists and technicians go to abroad and serve US etc and in the return they shift their low tech jobs and make while collard clerks in India. Looks like India is a dumping ground for some different sort of jobs. Lord MaCaulay's dream is finally coming true: India becoming a nation of Brown skinned sahibs/clerks and loosing its intellectual capital. Make more IITs but make sure people who come out of those institutes stay in and in other words, put more money into research and developemtn and tax this IT and BPO industry heavily to fund other crucial sectors. No R&D means no long term progress, we will always be dependent on west for technology.
Its seems amazing ..increasing number IITs doesnt increase brilliant brains. This step seems like increasing a crowd with stigma having IIT but not good brains.
