I believe that ITBHU ,Varanasi which has been integral part of IITJEE pattern needs to be renamed as IIT Varanasi.
The Institute, which has been selecting its undergraduate students along with the IITs, using the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) system since 1972, has been steadily moving up the technical school rankings over the past few years. The last major survey ranked it 8th in the country, right along with the IITs. The Institute boasts of one of the best placement records in the country and continues to provide leaders to all segments of the industry. With an enviable list of distinguished alumni and extremely well equipped laboratories and workshops, IT- BHU is well poised to retain its status of a leading Centre of Research and Excellence in Engineering and Technology. The Ganga Action plan, the pathbreaking work on semiconductors and the many leading CEOs of both public and private sector firms that it has produced, is a testimony of the potential of this institution, carefully nurtured over decades of hard work and sincere effort.
It's a noble step by the government to increase the number of IIT's.The IIT's have spawned great minds during the past. It's also a good idea to upgrade some of the REC's to IIT's.
The government should evaluate the existing facilities and the staff and then upgrade them to IIT's.
IIT's are regarded as one of the best Institutions by the whole world.
I think following points need to be considered by government.
1. Even existing IITs are not getting good enough replacement for old professors that are retiring. How would new ones get them.
2. With a meagre government funding IITs are able to keep up with technology only through donations and support of Alumni. If govt cannot give funds just giving the name of IIT to a college would change nothing.
3. Keep in mind the demand-supply equation. If you produce more engineers than the industry can hire, you would spoil everything. Four years back avg salary in IITs used to be above 3.5 lakhs per annum. Now companies dare to offer as low as 1.8 per annum.
Nothing changes much with the name....IITians are the best and they will always be too...please lets not change their uniqueness in the name of reformation and spoil their reputation too...
what makes the IITs different from the other engineering colleges in India apart from some facilities?...It is nothing but the purely merit based entrance system, which allows only the bright and deserving into it. India needs to get out of the reservation mode, which is only making people lazy and incompetent, needless to say the divisions it creates in our society. To compete globally no one will come to India's rescue(not even V.P.Singh & Mandal commision) with reservation for BC, MBC, SC, ST....
Increasing the number of IITs is not a problem but maintaining the quality of IITs is very very important. Don't blindly give the names as IITs,first check whether we can maintain the quality of that name by providing all the facilities and also think whether we can provide best education with efficient professors or not. Since The IITs have popular name all over the world, increase the number of IITs only if we have the confidence that we can meet the Standards. Before increasing the IITs make sure that the IIT-JEE or GATE entrance is standard so that efficent students can come into IITs and they will keepup the name of IITs.
