I think we have had enough of III,s. The IITians are already ruling the world(60% of the population in the silcon valley is indian). I myself am is proud of being an IITian. But I think what india now needs are some good research institutions capable of contributing to the fundamental sciences.Thats what is the call of the time. The first half of the 20th century belonged to the scientists and most of the discoveries and inventions were made during this time and the later half of the century belonged to the engineersas as they used that pool of knowledge to come up with all sort of technical advances. But now the onous is back to the science people as we have some new puzzles to solve. I think what the world needs more now are scientists not the engineers , "WE HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THEM".
Here is the opportunity for india to grab and have a lead if we can come up with some good research facilities and nurture some good talent instead of wasting our money to add to the existing pool of qulaified engineers.
The IITs are exclusive more due to differentiation created up front at the time of the entrance examination, and less due to amazing academic inputs at IIT! The competition amongst intrinsically bright students simply creates a natural atmosphere of learning that is self-sustaining.
Also, there are 2 kinds of people who emerge.. those who go abroad for further studies, and those who get absorbed into jobs here. We need more of the latter and less of the former.
Now, given this, it really is a good idea if the number of IITs were to increase. As the total throughput increases, so also those employed in India. We just need to make sure that a couplfew things are ensured while making this transition...
1) The rigour of the entrance examination must be preserved. A diluted entrance exam will only dilute the quality of intake
2) Even now almost 400000 students take the exam. The real differentiation is amongst the top 100 or so, after that the difference is marginal at best. We need to create a means to differentiate better if the intake is to increase
3) An process of incentivising students to take up jobs in India while disincentivising going abroad should be created
YES i think we do need atleast 3 more IITs. The standard of the institution will not go down just because the number of seats increased. In fact it will do good for the nation because there are many more students who deserve to study in prime institutes and miss out because of less no of seats. For a country as populous as ours havin lots of talented and intelligent students having 12 IITs is no big deal.
By increasing the number of IITs, the government is doing a huge blunder. This will increase only the quantity of engineers in India, at the expense of quality. IITs are world renowned only because the best of the best in India get to study there. If every second engineer passing is going to be an IITian, it will surely be at expense of quality. Let us hope that good sense dawns on this government, which is trying to portray itself as a very progressive government due to the forth coming Lok sabha elections and the pride and prestige of being an IITian is restored.
IIT's have already got a brand image and if the govt is trying to pursue to glorify that image even more than its moving in the right direction . Although the exclusiveness of the IIT's will be diluted but it will gather strength over time if the quality of the education and the infrastructure provided in the 'upgraded' uni's remains the same. Obviously reputed institutes like IT-BHU which have over the years spurned various intellectual houses at an enterpreunial, industrial and research level should be given weightage. Such institutes and their students will benefit immensely with the IIT tag. With the competition increasing over the years it will be only a matter of time that the new IIT's will succeed in creating another brand which will continue to be the envy of the world and make india proud in the generations to come. Go For It .. sensibly but surely after all its not abt "more the merrier" anymore .. its all about "more for the better " !
Yes, we need it. I dont understand why exclusiveness is more important than the better oppertuinities of hi-tech education within the country? More important aspect to be kept in mind is more number of IITs should not be transformed to more number of substandard high-fee squeezing colleges. We should equate capable staff, infrastructure, funding etc and it is the responsibility of the Govt and if PM is promising for that nobody should worry about dilution of exclusiveness. Every year thousands of brains are going abroad for Hi-tech studies by spending crores of rupees, if we generate enough oppertuinities here this flow will be reduced considerably.
creating more IIT's will definitely reduce the prestige of the present iit's. IIT is considered as a very good institute all over the world and especially in USA where the students of IIT are excelling in the research work. It would be better, if Govt of India considers doubling the number of students by way of incresing every year 25 % more seat, at the same time maintaining the same standard for admission and course. This will reduce the budget and also prestige of these institutes.
if the Government starts thinking of incresing more number of iit's, it will take 5 to 6 years for them to establish and by that time, the technological advancement in education would have changed.
Alternatively, like C.A / M.B.A, the Govt.can float a new university with very high standard competitive exams and give degree.
Right move by the govt at the right time. They should think of improving the quality also.....
I advise the AndhraPradesh Govt to ask the center to get one IIT at Basara..even the figures indicate that the number of students from AP is increasing year by year.
No more new IITs. Definitely it will dilute the image. Because the premier institution is fewer in number, the most brainy fellows try and get into it. It is my feeling that the curriculam and the brainy student batches alone help in the quality of the technocrats despatched and not in the teaching side.
If less brainy fellows too are able to get in, it will definitely demoralize the shinier ones which is not good.
