Its so true. I congratulate writer for writing this piece of article. Many around us simply don't want to bend their bodies since they have servants to take care of that. We rather spend huge sums for out of shape bodies haha..

indian sports person are doing everything themselves; with no support from state; have we heard any news from govt., encouraging athletes. and mostly poor people take up sports in india - rich go for sports like cricket (men); shooting; golf; tennis etc. see the indian hockey team mostly made up of poor tribal girls and rural girls from panjab / haryana. there are no college going girls in these teams. so what ever these kids are doing its on their own with no help from anybody; ms. karmakar made saddle of old scooter and she reached 4th in the world; we shd thank these kids for bringing glory even if they reach top 10; mrs shobha dey has no clue what she is talking about; their survival is at stake; we all shd thank them; this is the best that they can do with no support. jai hind !!

We need change at grassroot level and psychology

I believe there are two main factors why we are where we are in Olympics. Firstly, whereas we have gradually but surely built facilities for Sports, they are not at grass root level such as in schools or rural India. Therefore the athletes those come up the ladder are not necessarily the best of talent that we might have. Couple with this the fact that there is resistance in the minds of parents to push their wards in sports because of the poor background most of the people in India belong to. Combination of these two factors does not allow our talent base to show up.

Secondly, I think culturally we are a race who gets happy with second position. In other words we are not passionate about reaching the epitome of excellence, so much required for number one position in the world. Take the case of China where one prepared for a medal in Olympics from the age of 4-5 years itself !!!! And this endeavor is supported by a combination of government support, parents and passion of the candidate.

I think we are one generation away from being seen as a serious country in such competitions. I guess the current generation of children enjoy more support in terms of infrastructure, psychology of parents and self-confidence.

Funny but true

I distinctly remember that after the failures in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics, the same things were discussed by people.

The points made, allegations leveled, emotions shown and hopes expressed were all the same, except that, in those days it was not online.

by subhajeet on Aug 17, 2016 02:14 PM

We did well to qualify for so many event....infact luck also plays a part...Argentina entered finals and we were the team to beat them in hockey....Story of dipa all knows.....Sania and Boppanna were about to reach the finals....Bindra missed by a whisker....Atanu and Bombayala fought and missed narrowly.....Sindhu is doing good...Kidambi got a tough draw...so just a bit luck also would have favoured then we would have been on the medals podium quite a few times.....still hopes from wrestlers and the shuttlers..........we are doing better and will improve....our presence in olympics have increased
