This officials are appointed not on the basis of their expertise but on the basis of their influence and political affiliation. They enjoy their foreign tour at public money while the sportsmen puts great efforts and hardship under poor condition to bring glory for the country.

If the officials felt that she (Sarita Devi in this case) should have won her bout and was awarded the bronze medal, the South Korean should not have been given the silver medal. If the South Korean was given the silver medal, then the Indian (Sarita Devi in this case) should have been given the Gold medal for defeating the South Korean. India should protest officially.

Why compare Sarita with Sachin?
by Chaitanya on Oct 03, 2014 06:00 PM  | Hide replies

Amusing to see some messages comparing with Sachin.

First, cricket is a team sport. One person gets a poor decision, it does not necessarily mean the match is lost.

Second, bad decisions that give a batsman out can always be defended as a MOMENTARY lapse of judgement or alertness, on the part of the cricket umpire. In contrast, what happened in Sarita's case, was that she completely dominated the match from start to finish, and was still declared as having lost. This cannot by any means be excused as a momentary lapse of judgement. It was a case of pre-planned fixing, simple.

Third, between cricket and non-cricket sporting event, just compare the amount of sacrifices a non-cricketing sportsperson has to make, the financial insecurity she lives with, how few opportunities they get to prove themselves, and, how little money or fame they get in return. After making so much sacrifices, and training so hard, they get one rare opportunity to compete, in four years, and if they realize that the match was sold off in a pre-planned manner, just imagine the enormity of that.

Fourth, from start of his career to the end, Sachin enjoyed privileged Godd-like status. His fate was in his own hands. No one could drop him from the team. Only he could decide when or whether he would leave. In such a situation it is relatively easy for anyone to practice this questionable virtue of silent surrender to gross injustice.

Moraly right , lawfully wrong
by BS on Oct 03, 2014 05:06 PM  | Hide replies

Rule/Law has the last laugh. if people responsible for upholding the law do not do their duties properly all one can do is to appeal against it.

It was indeed Sarita's badluck that some of the judges judges decided to support the local athlete. It was indeed a 'loaded' decision.

But one can not change the Rules laid down. There is no way she can excape a Ban if she had not apologised.

Yes, the laws are for people who cannot/should not voice their opinion i.e bad luck/fate etc. But, for others,(Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Ganguly, Harbhajan etc), lying, racism etc is their birth right. By a Shameless (Indian) Cricket idiotic fan.

She's Saritha not Tendulkar or Doda:
by nishu kutty on Oct 03, 2014 04:59 PM

Since it was poor Saritha from the North-East, many idiots are giving sermons about Sportsmanship. But, when Tendulkar lied and defended Monkey Harbhajan in Australia, it was great sportsmanship. Shame on lying Tendulkar's fans and Boxing officials.

Sarita Devi's Actions
by Murali Krishna on Oct 03, 2014 03:36 PM  | Hide replies

Sarita Devi need not have to act the way she did during medal ceremony as she has to prepare for such incidents in sports. A strong protest is sufficient and media support she got was more than enough. She has done a right thing by apologizing before it is too late.

Sarita Devi's Boxing bout
by h choudhary on Oct 03, 2014 03:28 PM  | Hide replies

What Sarita Devi did was the only way to answer injustice done to her and to Boxing fraternity & sports as a whole.
This act of hers is a STRAIGHT PUNCH on the FACE OF SYCOPHANTS.
Equally responsible are Indian offcials who neither took initiative to lodge official complaint not consoled the aggrieved Sarita Devi. It's a matter of shame that she had to pay the protest money/fees from her personal account.
In case any official organization / authority takes any disciplinary action against Sarita Devi, then Boxing Federation should bear that penalty/punishment. Govt of India must give her permanent job so that she can feel proud and free to fight such injustice.
SARITA DEVI IS SYMBOL OF STRENTH TO PROTEST INJUSTICE AND MUST BE SUPPORTED IN ALL ASPECT MORALLY FINANCIALLY.

I agree.

This is what I have also been trying to say in my posts.

Support for her action must come from ALL quarters, including sponsors, so that, even if she faces a life-time ban (unlikely though it is), she should be given appropriate national awards and honored, and made financially secure with employment and sponsorship offers.

@rizvi:

The responsibility to honor the "spirit of sports" lies equally with judges and officials. Why only with players?

According to you, the judges and officials can do worse than what they have done, they can even declare falsely that Sarita had fouled her opponent 10 times during the match, and, in the interest of the "spirit of sport", Sarita should meekly smile and submit and surrender?
