This achievement is stupendous! But the better achievement for him is that he cemented his place in every Indian's heart forever as a champion without an iota of ill will against him ..something sachin would be wishing for!

To equate Anand to Sania is a blunder. He has earned a lot of money and probably you are jealous of his wealth and fame. I believe Vishy represented India. However, it appears he doesn't stay much of the time in India and spends much of his time in Madrid and other European regions.

Hearty congrats Vishwanathan Anand!

Yesterday we saw two interviews. One from Anand in Times now: after achieving such a big thing he was so modest.
We also saw the interview by SRK on Times of India. For a nonsense club game he was so arrogant eventhough his contribution was nothing..
The former is not very popular i India and we Indians go gaga on the latter...

Not enough chess in India
by French Cuisine on May 31, 2012 08:39 AM  | Hide replies

Anand has made an extraordinary impact on Indian chess, but still this game is not as popular as it should be. According to me this game should be our national passion instead of cricket. Why doesn't rediff post a game analysis instead of showing Anand's face or hisAzz? Even TOIhas not posted any game analysis. India's best talents often come from the villages where most of our people live. And all over the world it is from the villages the best sportsmen emerge. We have done little to make sports available to the villagers, for that matter to the cities. There should be a lot more chess clubs here and lot more youngsters taking up the game and a much more attractive state-national arena. And yes bros - chess is not really a sport but it is super-fun.

French - There are quite a many, if you look at it. But the unique thing about chess is that you can evolve to an extent but beyond a stage, you need special talent or ability as well as intense preparation to reach higher levels. This is where Anand scores. What you talk about is for generating a lot of also rans. True champions will find their way and the current state of affairs in India is good enough for that.

Tell me why there is no one in India to challenge or measure up to Anand even though Anand was in limelight for 15 years now? Its the ability and talent that matters and chess is all said and done an individual sport.

LOL. Are you serious?

So if people eat cow dung, we should just let them feast on it? Cricket is a sport for losers. 10 countries play it, of which 5-6 are failed nations.

Do you not see the logic? Not one advanced nation plays it...and for good reason...they don't like to eat cow dung.

Every game has its own challenges and skillset and every sport has its fans and followers. Just because you are following chess (or perhaps just reading in newspaper about it) doesn't make you any better than those who are following IPL. Why do you have to demean your fellow citizens? Does it give you any sadistic pleasure? How does it prove that you have brains?
