TRUE SPORTSMAN

According to me Vishy Anand is biggest sportsman in India because without taking any help from any Govt. and other companies he is single handedly fighting for past several years and flying Indian flag across globe. Hearty Congratulations…..

Issue with Bharat Ratna
by French Cuisine on May 31, 2012 11:34 AM  | Hide replies

People have started noticing now that Anand should be awarded a Bharat Ratna. Undoubtedly he is a prime candidate but people are missing the whole point. Where is the enthusiasm for chess in this country? People are just looking for - "oh he won, or oh we lost" kind of an attitude. Without garnering more enthusiasm for chess and taking a concerted effort to promote the game the whole point is lost. I am happy that Tamil Nadu tried to introduce the game in schools - but many parts of India have produced great talents. And yet when I go to the bookstore to pick up a book on chess there is none! Infact the recent bookstores are more or less scrapping all science sections in favor of businessManagement andPolitics. Everyone wantsAnMBA and all other intellectualPursuits are abandoned. Go toYour localCrosswords store - you will find not one book on chess. But if you are in the US - go to BarnesAndNobles and you will find at least fiftyBooks and ChessPuzzles.
So what is the whole point - a nationOf aBillion canProduce at most 10 worldClassIntellects. Hehehe - meraBharatMahan!

Since I am a very weak player I need book theory to strengthen my game. Most strong GMs keep themselves updated on theory, they use computers perhaps.

FYI, Paes has won a tennis singles medal in olympics. He also has won maximum number of grand-slams as an Indian player.

grand slam titles in doubles don't count for much because all top players focus on singles and stay away from doubles

Anand Ho!
by plain on May 31, 2012 11:22 AM  | Hide replies

While 180 countries play chess, and you are not one but FIVE times World Champion is unbelievable! Regretfully stated that even the national daily prints IPL on front page and Anand is tucked somewhere inside. Mr Editor The priorities have to be changed. Lastly Bharat Ratna for sports persons if given is to be conferred in the following order:-
1. V Anand
2. Late Major Dhyan Chand (Posth.)
3. PT Usha
4. Sachin Tendulkar
5. Wilson Jones
6. Mihir Sen
7. Geet Sethi
8. Abhinav Bindra
9. Prakash (either of the two Badminton players)
10. Milkha Singh

No one is stopping other countries to play cricket. Let them start playing now and beat India in 2150. If only 10 or 12 countries are playing then you can make out its very very to competitive to get in there... remember India took almost 50 years to come to a world beater stage. Same with SL they took more than 25 years to come to the world stage... so lets not talk rubbish by comparing it with other sports. Its a different matter altogther than Indians are not focussing on other sports.. Maybe it would take 100 years or India to compete in Football or Athletics... Its simple... you have to really slog to attain greatness

No one is stopping other countries to compete in Cricket. Its just that only 12 countries have come to a level in competing. So to attain greatness we need to slog from scratch....

Its a different matter altogether that India or Indians are not focussing in other Sports... We need a World cup win or some Golden moment for people to plunge into different sports like India winning the WC in 1983 to inspire a whole bunch of People to take up that sport... Slog to Achieve.... Nothing comes easy... Cricket is open for other countries as well... no one is stopping....

India are world champions in kabaddi and carroms. why should those players not get Bharat Ratna, since nobody stops other countries from playing these games.

Great
by MM on May 31, 2012 11:19 AM  | Hide replies

Chess is comparatively intellectual game whereas cricket is more of physical nature.

No doubt, he is indeed brilliant than cricketers..

However, for recognition from political and Indian mass for awards like Bharat Ratna, it is better he is from a BC or a Muslim..

If He were SRK or Kalam, our leaders and intellectual Indian public would have lined up in queue.. and compete with each other to greet him, demand for Bharata Ratna..

Whereas he is a Hindu and that too a Iyer Brahmin..
No wonder, no political leaders are quick enough to beat the Drums for Him...

Good that He settled in Europe.

Heartily Congratulations!!

Best wishes,
mahesh
