To Improve medals count
by Face it Dude on Aug 14, 2012 10:37 PM

1) Identify target sports activities that we want to really excel (say 10-15 nos). More can be added as things change.

2) Establish standards for each in this target list and rate potential stars against those benchmarks

3) Provide adequate financial security to all sportsperson that practice the target list of sports that meet with the benchmark so they maintain a standard of living. This should be sponsored by state and should continue as long as they are engaged in the sporting activity.

4) Provide financial and other incentives if they out do themselves and achieve higher goals. This should be regulated and monitored by sports ministry.

5) Increase awareness / visibility amongst public about the target sports in the country by state sponsored programmes

6) Sponsoring norms for private agencies should be revised so that all sports persons engaged in the target list of sports get an equal chance towards gaining public visibility.

India will get more medals if these are done systematically.

Time to forget cricket and corruption
by sivanantham on Aug 14, 2012 11:49 AM

Now we should cricket and corruption.
These two are the main killers for our development.
Now cricketers are giving importance to IPL since they get too much money. However, they don't want to play international matches for Inida. so our people should realize and forget the cricket.
Also we should focus on the games which have more number of medals. eg., swimming and track and field events. Americans are getting many medals from these games. So we have to plan tactically.
If these things happen, then we will be in top.

Why the US trounced china in the 2012 London Olympics
by Vishnu Sharma on Aug 14, 2012 03:49 AM  | Hide replies

Americans can now take a moment to revel in the outcome of this year’s Olympics: Having briefly ceded the top slot to China in 2008, the U.S. can once again claim resounding victory in both overall medals and gold medals. This development is heartening on its own terms, but even more important, it serves as a much-needed reminder of why the 21st century will still be an American century — and not just in athletics.

China’s population is currently over 1.3 billion. In recent years, China has made the Olympics a top priority, putting immense pressure on its athletes to produce gold medals, noting that any athlete who loses will disappoint an entire nation, offering cash prizes to winners, and instructing athletes to produce gold as “the motherland is above everything.” As a result, China crept from fourth place in 1996 to third in 2000, second in 2004, and first in 2008.

And yet, rather than continuing its seemingly inexorable rise, China fell back to second place this year. How did the United States, a country with less than one-quarter of China’s population, again produce a greater number of medal-winning athletes ?
China applies the same command-and-control mentality to its sports as it does to other areas of its economy. The Chinese government, through an agency called the General Administration of Sport, determines which athletic disciplines should receive government funds.

Whereas the US uses a Free-Market approach and is therefore

India used a free for all approach. Whether you win or lose we will suck up to you with garlands and roses... so no problem for anyone.

Fantastic Article
by sanjay krishnan on Aug 13, 2012 10:35 PM

I agree with each point made by the author. The government & private sector companies have to support all aspiring sportsmen. We should nurture younger talent & train them with the help of experienced coaches at good training facilities. Hope to see many more medals & champions emerge from India during the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Start at Schools !!
by Deeapk Bisht on Aug 13, 2012 06:01 PM

Sport facilities must be improved at Schools. There should be minimum criteria of sports infrastructure to be made available to students in order to recognize these schools. There must be targets set for every school to achieve in district / state levels and based on these targets incentives in terms of Government grants should be decided.
Private organizations should be encouraged to build infrastructure for sports and manage sports facilities. In all sense sports management should become a profitable business to attract big companies to venture into this field.
Management courses for Sport related fields should be seriously looked upon so that the sportsmen can take these as serious carer options once they retire from active sports.

Public and private sectors must encourage future Ol
by Krishnan P.R on Aug 13, 2012 05:33 PM

after every olympic this or similar topic is discussed. The discussions will be faded in due course. First of all the goverment should form a separate cell to prepare the sportsman and 2 years before the event they have personally assess the needs of each sportsman and esnure they are fit in every respect. This cell should only consist of experts from sports and NOT politicians. If this can happen we will also figure top 20 nations in medal list.

Our Sports Personnel
by K Bhaskaran on Aug 13, 2012 05:31 PM

Though entire India are proud of the achievements of Indians in Olympics this year, it is a national shame that we could get only 6 medals after 65 years of getting Independence. Either we are not serious of encouraging and funding of sports personnel or the Sports Bodies are not manned by Sportsmen. Politicians dorn the posts for selfish ends. This should stop. The corrupt politicians should be debarred from being a member in the Governing Body. e.g.Kalmadi, etc.
