First just check about the open places available for the population .In cities including metros - all open places have been robbed by politicians and the real estate people.also most of the land is robbed by politicians in some form or other - Cahritable trusts is a common ploy .Schools and colleges are built - the ground is locked from publci usage ,but is available for fashion shows ,marriages . do you have a decent ,hygenic swimming pool where budding swimmers can practice - what is the cost of the such clubs .How many can offer this ? Milk how many can drink at current prices .Private sector will bribe a politician, or a bureaucrat to do mostly to break some rule or law (It is a different thing the rules and laws for that matter whole system is corruption prone ).Why should any one visit a government office in this era of computerisation - it is for goose nothing else most of the jobs can be done without visiting an office like in western society . Here I learn for Ganseh Pandal some 28 clearances are required who has the time to get them - so every one breaks them and the governemtn employees loot . Sir , we need a basic thinking an attitude change - which will never come with the current politicians and their children who are taking the reigns.

"the government should persuade India's 50 largest companies to provide the same kind of facilities for sportspersons as the public sector does"..

Are you suggesting that private sector contributes by letting it's employees be successful sportspersons and come to work once a month and still pay them ? Ha ha ha.

So what if we don't succeed in sports.

Success in science/technology/agriculture/industry and other useful fields is more imp.

We need to feed 120 cr people, that should be our primary investment.

YOU ARE OFF THE MARK, Mr.THOMAS!
by Kabeer on Aug 13, 2012 03:47 PM  | Hide replies

Dear Mr.Thomas,

I am a great admirer of your successor at Hindustan Lever, i.e. Dr.Ashok Ganguly who currently is a Rajya Sabha member, and also to a little extent you too.

But I must say that I am disappointed by your narrower vision and a near lack of understanding about olympics, sports and their place in life.

Rewarding champions as a part of solution amuses me; of course they should be, but that is not the starting point.

The starting point is providing sports facilities in general public life; in schools, colleges, villages and organisations, and govt offices.

I give you one examle:

The entire population of New Zealand is about 30 lac i.e. equivalent to one suburb of Bombay which has 100 lac population.

But NZ has more number of proper cricket grounds in it than the entire India has; NZ is a fraction of India in space terms.

That is the yardstick one should measure; not rewards and promotions for winners. Once a person is a winner you dont have to recognise him; the world has already recognised him/her. What we should do is making the champion.

If Govt, private sector, and everybody provides sporting facilities all over, many people will play sport and there by champions automatically emerge.

But that requires lot of investment. Your suggestion is not to invest but reward the winners which is not correct. An investment in sporting facilities is a measure of how the state takes care of its citizens welfare; when you play sports your physical & mental healt

Americans, Europeans do that and that is why not just champions emerge but a bevy of sports persons emerge.

China is bad example:

It has created an assembly line system for creating sports persons. It has put select centres and trained young men and women and girls and boys like robots to win medals.

It is like Tiger conservation.

Tiger conservation should be in free jungles; not the Chinese type farming.

I also oppose poor nations organising olympics in their nations. These nations must first invest that money in sporting facilities first before organising olympics or Asiads or CWGs.

India, and CHina are showcasing these events to mislead the world and worse, its own people that they are super powers which they are not.

It is like by imitating the symptoms of success we are believing that we are actually healthy which we are not.

Medals are symptoms of well being in sports; they are natural outcome they should be that way only.

China and India, instead, are trying to win medals, (Chinese succeeded)without investing in large sporting facilities. This assembly line manufacturing of medals is ignominious.

Tatas dont provide sporting facilities; they in turn recruit medal winners like Deepika Kumari into employment and instead use them as their advertisement for their Tata name which is hideous.

Tatas instead should have provided sporting facilites in its townships and should have harvested champions . Alas!

Neither the PSUs do it. Only Army does it.

Thomas must understand what the reasoning is behind Olympics, Asiads, CWGs allowing only Amateurs and not professionals.

Amateurs do it for the sake of the sport and not for money.

Professionals are not; they pursue a sport for a CAREER and MONEY.

Sports are meant to be a CAREER.

Unfortunately, Thomas is canvassing for converting Sports into Professionalism and not Amateurish.

Why Indian hockey is in such doldrums?

Ask how many astroturfs are there in the country?

If would be surprised if the entire nation has a dozen.

Mr.Thomas, dont reward the sports persons with money and promotions; instead provide the facilities to young kids.

If I were the SPorts Minsiter, I would have reserved 70% of seats in all auditoria and stadia during CWG and Asiad only for children and young men and women below the age of 22.

Instead the SPorts Minster and the Federations reserved them for VIPs and VVIPs who never turned up and empty stadia greeted world class athletes while they perform.

Had it been kept open to children and youth all the stadia for all events been house full for all the events on all days.

Sad!

Even people like Thomas cant appreciate how it should be done.

May be I am wrong, Thomas knows how to run an FMCG and arrogates himself thinking that I can talk about on any subject in the world.

Depends on the attitude
by Rajesh Kamthe on Aug 13, 2012 03:37 PM

Here there are two scenarios that comes to mind, first is where you wait for a player to prove his talent and then train him or her properly at all best possible level or you go to the people to find the real talent.
The chances of winning more medals in the first case scenario are very less because of very low exposure to the sports and the approach of the parents and the administration, but if you really feel that winning medals @ Olympics is a matter of pride then you will have to adopt an approach in the second mentioned scenario but for that we need killer instinct approach by the govt.,complete turnaround in the education system which will allow enough time to create world class sportsman and support by parents to the prospective contenders.
We can definitely achieve significant results.
