There are two major failures in the run up to the CWG. The first one is the major talking point and, this relates to the unpreparedness about the arrangements at the venues. But a greater and far more damaging situation is with the city's infrastructure that has heaped enormous social costs through traffic jams, vehicle damages and general worsening of public health. Unfortunately while the venues will be of relevance for just two weeks, the urban degeneration shall last at least a generation. It is intriguing that no one is talking about this because as per our culture we are interested only in what the foreigners have to say. In the instant case they are talking about the comfort and safety of the visitors. We are not looking at the bigger picture which sends a strong message about the plight of 150 lakhs of citizens of Delhi who shall either be performing acrobatic travel tricks along the roads or looking at despair at the fallout of some of the badly planned roads constructed at astronomical costs wihout any purpose. Who are the people who had taken these decisions? Were these decisions taken by professionally competent people or, by people who occupy decision making positions by virtue of intrigues in the corridors of power? This is actually the worst kind of exploitation of the masses who have to earn their livelihoods through their sweat. Will anyone (or any agency) be held accountable for this? The responsibility rests with the local administration.
