Myth of the Hockey Team
by Saurav Basu on Oct 12, 2010 07:55 PM

Our best hockey team in the last 20 yrs was the Asian Games gold medal winning squad. And possibly the Sydney Olympics team which missed a semi final berth by a whisker. The Team for Champions Trophy 2003-4 with Jugraj Singh was also amongst the best

This is a very average team.

I will probably remember 1500 BST on Tuesday, 12 October 2010 for all time. Not all the sport at the 2010 Commonwealth Games has been of the highest standard. Some of it has been rather depressingly far from it. But the twin spectacles of the England-India hockey and that Indian 4x400m win were simply awesome, in the original sense of the word.
I've had so much correspondence from you that I can't possibly publish all of it. But it's heartening to know you enjoyed that as much as I did. Onward. Badminton news incoming...

BBC: 4x400 India Gold
by Pankaj Mehta on Oct 12, 2010 07:47 PM

Tom Fordyce : The best moment of the Games so far - India's 4x400m team winning a sensational gold. Quite an incredible noise, as loud as you've ever heard at athletics.

Don't lose perspective
by Saurav Basu on Oct 12, 2010 07:43 PM  | Hide replies

Really inane, a team which cannot win more than three medals in the Olympics winning 100 medals in the CW. Speaks volumes on the REAL standard of the CW. The real icing on the cake was the discus throw event where Indians won all medals without even breaking the national record! HO HO HO

IN Hockey, India cannot beat SPain, Germany, Netherlands, and will again receive a sound thrashing from Australia. This will bring us down to earth. How can we forget the great debacle of the World Cup 2010 held in Feb at the same venue. Can't have changed from losers to winners in six odd months?

Mr Basu, U must realise that India is an under-developed nation with teeming starving millions of people who do not eat two meals a day. Our athletes and sportspersons have no jobs and patronage (except the cricket tamasha). Under the circumstances our boys & girls have done wonders and brought laurels to India. Well done! Bharat Mahaan!!

Dear Mr Ansari,

Cuba is an underdeveloped nation with starving people too. So is Kenya and Uganda. They win more than 10 golds consistently in the Olympics. And India is the 9th largest economy of the world. CWG some claim is a 70,000 crore scam. There is no dearth of money.

Give credit to atheletes but let us not lose focus of the fact that none of them is a world beater, yet. Except Gagan Narang and Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar, Vijender, Saina and a couple of others

All this from a nation of 1.2 billion people!
