Please do not compare this with Cricket
by Yogesh Gupta on May 14, 2010 10:48 AM  | Hide replies

In India where there was no atmosphere of chess, no government support, no coaches, no chess books, no grandmasters 25 years back, no chess playing computers, Anand made it to the highest level of Chess and went on to win multiple championships which is like a driver takes Maruti 800 to formula 1 and wins world championship, and winning the war with a stick when your opponent has an AK 47. So, please do not make ridiculous comparisons of Anand's achievements with film stars of cricketers.

Mr.Yogesh: In the year 1992 Anand had to play Karpov abroad. Liberalisation had not yet come into the Indian economy and foreign exchange was very difficult to be obtained by all Indian citizens excepting, of course, the cricketers. You will be surprised to know that the Government of India took a Bank Guarantee from Vishy Anand that he will repatriate the foreign exchange released to him for the championship, before he was released the required foreign currency to play Karpov. This is just one example of what he had to encounter. When he won the World Championship for the first time, Uma Bharaty, the then Sports Minister, said that Anand does not need any cash awards from the Government, as he already has lot of money. These jokers never say that about our good for nothing, over paid, media created cricket icons of the country who just play against 7 nations (ours being the 8th cricket playing nation) and call it World Cup! When Tendulkar scored the 200 in the one-dayer, the PM, the President and the whole lot of politicians congratulated him as if it was the greatest sporting achievement. So far no politician, including the CM of Tamilnadu, has thought it fit to congratulate Anand for winning his fourth World championship. It is indeed unfortunate that one of the all time greats of Chess is born in India, who do not know how to honour him. To hell with cricket and the cricketers! They are all media created demi-gods of this country!

Cricket is the Unique game where Three diff. talent tested Simultaniously - Batting, Bowling and Fielding and hence it is more popular than chess.
I tried Chess but it didn't impress me
Secondly cricketers actually "Move" and "Run" on vast field,
In Chess you have to "move" Horses, Camel and Elephant , player Does NOT "move", in Short playing Cricket is much more difficult than Chess and 100 million people like it.
Chess is usually played in Brahmin Community where only Two can Participate as against Cricket which offers flexibility of players ranging from Mim 5 to Max 22.
So, How and WHY could anyone support/ encourage Chess in population of 100 crore country ??

Whats ur issue Mr Shakil?

Honour the man who has "Brains" to play chess. Respect cricket not cricketers, few rise to the level what Sachin has achieved in cricket. Vishy Anand comes in the same league.

It is high time we respect & give due regards to this man who stood up against all odds.

cricket is a useless and worthless games which is not played in more than 10 countries.. a test match goes on for 5 days.. what a waste of time... in forseeable future cricket will lose the glmour, money and its popularity for sure

Mr.Shakil: In a poor country Chess is the best option. It is cheaper. All it needs is brain (of course, if you and your crickters have one) and mental toughness (which all our crickters including Tendulkar lack in crunch situations). Anand proved his mental toughness in the 12th game, winning with black. Look at the mental toughness of Tendulkar - 2003 world cup finals (out in the first over when India needed him to bat at his best), 2007 world cup (when Bangladesh made mince meat of India) and even recently during an one-dayer against Australia where though Tendulkar scored 175, he did not have the mental toughness to take India to a win when all they needed was 19 out of 20 balls with Tendulkar still batting. I think you will do well to stop writing nonsense, which you have been doing for the past of couple of days and accept the fact that the Vishy Anand, whether he is popular in India or not, is the GREATEST INDIAN SPORTSPERSON. He is 1 to 99 and all others, including Tendulkar, start from 100!

Media RUNS on TRP and Crowd pullying ability.
Anand and Chess in perticular has hardly 5 million viewers in India as against 100 million for Cricket and Bollywood.
Media is simply an equation of Demand and supply.
Secondly all BiG stars "Pay" for planting their news( "paid news").
I don't think Anand is parting with money to get popularity.
So it's NOT always Talent but TRP !!! Either pull the crowd OR Pay !!! that is Media.

ANAND THE GREAT
by Dwaraka Nath on May 14, 2010 09:53 AM  | Hide replies

CHESS IS THE MENTAL GAME AND ANAND IS ITS SUPREMO. OUR CRICKETERS SHOULD LEARN MUCH FROM ANAND TO KEEP THEIR MENTAL STUFF RATHER THAN PARTIYING WITH BOOZ AND GIRLS. DISCIPLINE IS VERY MUCH IMPORTANT IN ANY SPORT.

Cricket is Physically more demanding.
Cricketers perform at 38d C.
Full 5 Days - 10 to 5.
Chess on other hand is played under confortable atmosphere- A/C Hall.
Instead Ask Anand to play under Hot SUN and Humid condition,
I am sure he will fumble.

I thought that the team playing against our XI is playing under similar physically demanding conditions i.e. 38 Deg C - 5 days. From your post I infer that only our team is forced to play in such grueling conditions and the Lankans, Aussies are playing in Air conditioned stadium and that is why they are able to give our team a good licking!!

Admit it - our XI are having abundant talent but no mental toughness - like the Aussies - if we lose 2 wickets within 30 runs we lose heart and it's curtains. So many times I have watched guys like Steve Waugh, Bevan win from a hopeless situation - our batsmen may be superior but they dont have the grit. Chicken Hearts!!!
