Indian Hockey - we love and support it !
by swarna swarna on Mar 07, 2010 01:37 AM

Hi Guys,
India played realy well... I guess they are under too much pressure! We still need to encourage the game more in India, need lot of sponsors and even the public needs to understand that it is our National game. We also need to have frequent matches and series...just like we have in cricket. The more they practice the better they will get at it.
If we could help in anyway, please let us know...we NRIs can also contribute financially.

You have to earn respect...not demand
by Jai Bharath on Mar 07, 2010 12:38 AM  | Hide replies

The biggest change that has to happen is to not make excuses. It is like coming last in class and blaming the other students for doing their job.

As for support..it will come, but you cannot demand it or blame cricket. Remember, cricketers paid their due and India was a joke before the 1983 World Cup in world of One Day Cricket....Indian Hockey needs a moment of inspiration..that can only come from the players and the organizers...

Regarding support...it is BS. I went to the Hockey games during the Olympics in Atlanta...the crowd usually was 90% Indian with the flags and the painted faces and people from different corners of the country..if not the world were there...if this cannot inspire you...what can? The money will come..but you need to win something first...not talk about what happened a century ago.

Even in Cricket the story is the same. The same cricketers make personal records in bi-lateral series which are heavily manipulated and fixed to benefit the consumer companies in India who sponsor their players.

One such cricketer who scored a double century in ODI, was out twice and saved by third umpire is now claiming Bharat Ratna for him. :-))

Tell me which major competition Indian cricket team has won in last 7 years? They have been first round exiters in major championships.

Shift Style of Hockey
by gomakant mahambrey on Mar 07, 2010 12:34 AM

Indian hockey relies to much on dribbling skills but todays hockey demands that the ball reaches the goal rather than the men taking it across the goal. The faster the Indians switch to Passing the ball rather than dribbling and keeping it with them, the faster will they be able to improve their game. The long passes with one free forward who can trap and shoot would help. Besides penalty corners could be taken in various ways, some of the european guys dummy shot the ball and carry it literally with the stick and place in front of the main striker who either shoots or passes to the guy near the post if he has no clear view of the goal. Hope Brasa is listening and the WISE GUYS from Hockey India along with Vidya Stokes besides Veterans of the Bygone Era. But do the Veterans have a say, I doubt? Till Hockey India comprises of 80% ex-Internationals, Indian Hockey may not attain the Heights of the Bygone Era. Hope I'm proved Wrong, at the earliest.

Eternal hope
by Coolfi on Mar 06, 2010 11:49 PM  | Hide replies

We guys have eternal hope that the hockey team will come up with some miracle. When the Indian team had won the Asian Games gold medal and cursed the Federation on return, key critics were promptly thrown out. I don't remember anyone showing any interest or raising a hue and cry. But when we lose there is a huge disappointment. Coaches get fired, players get their lives ruined, but the association politicians always seem to come back unscathed. They fail miserable and ruin India's national game buy blatant devilish behavior, but it takes FIH to fire them. The only action they take promptly -- mirroring all other elements of Indian system -- is when someone needs to be harassed and hassled. I think a better indicator to show that we are really paying attention would be when we are disappointed when Indian team actually wins.

If Coach Brasa continues for a long term and the same team is retained for Commonwealth and Asian games, I see some hope.

Commonwealth games will see Australia, England, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa returning to India in October. Brasa is a very serious and intelligent coach and he would definitely utilize World cup lessons in next two major championships.

However, If Hockey India fiddles once again, then there is no hope.

If this news was about cricket team loss then there would have been 100s of comments discussing the loss.

Indian team needs support of Indian People. Not sure if people will give same support to the team during commonwealth games.

Shirkanth where are you from?

Team inexperienced, but played well
by S Shrikanth on Mar 06, 2010 11:25 PM  | Hide replies

I won't blame the players.

Considering what has been happening in Indian hockey for the last one year has brought morale of Indian team very low. The team was selected only 6 months before and new coach was found only months before World cup.So, there was no expectations from Indian hockey team at all considering its 12th ranking and playing in WC because of hosting it.
Also, this new team never played an international match before WC.
ut the team has played excellent hockey in the last 4 matches. In all matches they were unlucky, probably due to lack of experience.

What next? There is a roadmap ahead. They must think for future and take WC as experience.

India has to play 2 major tournaments this year - Asian Games and Commonwealth games. So, they must look forward and do well in these tournament.

Infact I have been follwing hockey from the time when Pargat Singh was captain of the team or even before and players like MP Singh were in the Indian team.

I can tell you that this is nothing new. Indian team has always played well but in the end they just don't make it to semis of events like Olympic or World Cup.

The problem is with finishing.

In 1982 Mumbai World cup, I was a kid listening running commentary of India Australia match. at the same time USSR was playing against might Holland. The equation was:

1. If USSR loses to Holland, India must win against Australia.
or

2. If USSR draws with Holland, a draw against Australia good enough to reach Semi final.

The result: USSR Vs Holland - Draw. India Vs Australia - India loses two golden opprtunities to score and loses 1-2.

So, this problem is very old.

The reason: India plays with short passes in the Dinstead of power shots, giving to much time to the defenders of opponent side and make mess in the circle.

You have good memory :-)

You are right about short passes in D though. With short passes they end up loosing the ball. Even with short passes at least they should try to earn penalty corners.

In most of matches opponents atleast socred 1 goal using power shots.

No, please do not demean their effort. Except for the one sided match against Australia, they played well against very strong teams. Australia(2) is being considered the probable champion and England did beat them. Spain is Olympic Silver medalist and No. 3 team in the world.

The match against Pakistan was morale boosting and it really brought everyone's attention to Hockey for the first time. Media became Hockey savvy, for one day. A very significant development.

a 2-3 result against the only invincible team in Pool B is not a bad performance.

They must keep this momentum against SA who beat Pak today 4-1.

Nobody knows why Savanjit Singh is in the team. He lost ball easily and was trying to dribble to much. Bharat is same.

Chandi showed some improvement though.
