accept reality

We have to accept that India quaalified to play in this world cup being a host country. Australia are raanked two in the world. looking at the match they must have easily scored about 8-9 goals. they were much faster, fitter and also very well in handling the passes.
Indis has to put everything to be in contention in the world cup. Only commitment and motivaation to play for India on home ground can overcome lack of skill. Best of luck India. prove and fight.

No matter what, Hockey (as well as other Sports) have to be revived in India & shown golden days. Everybody just wants to languish in the Gutter of Cricket.

This Indian Team is one of the Best
by Talisman on Mar 03, 2010 10:35 AM

Will beat Aussies when we meet them in the semis. Aussies were real lucky to get two goals in the first five minutes.

I would have guessed the aussies will be keen to score early goals, as they were low on confidence from the England match - where they couldnt score no matter the mo of penmalty corners they got.

If Indians had put everything on the line and denied them in the first 10 minutes, we would have beaten them 5 - 2. But, when you give two early goals, even this great team couldnt come back.

Sack Adrian D'souza
by Chat on Mar 03, 2010 08:54 AM

Adrian D'souza shd b sacked for his poor performance. Although he saved 1 penalty stroke , he was nt able to guess whch way Oz players were to hit in penalty corners. Chandi is another boon & neeeds to shw the exit doors.

don't bother about losses

india did not play well against Australia. we did not try to control the ball and play possession hockey as we did against Pakistan.

it was only after the first 20 mins of the game when we woke up and played decently. Hopefully, our players would have learned from this and not repeat the mistake.

our game also displayed a lack of knowledge of the rules of the game (video referee mess) and some breakdown in discipline with players arguing with the referee. We need to work hard at this aspect of the game.

Expecting Indian hockey Team to beat Australia in World cup is a foolish thinking for the next 4 years. There are clear reasons for this. The Govt investment on Hockey has come down drastically in the last one decade. The institution called IHF got restricted to Chandigarh on whims of the 80 year old administrator. The newly formed Hockey India too is in disarray. Hockey players did not get salary(forget rewards for winning tournaments last year) and had to go for a protest to get their salaries. Under these circumstances, Indian team ranked 12th in the world, should had been expected to be bottomer in their group. However, they put a good show against Pak and played not too bad against Australia, the strongest hockey team on the earth. Forget the defeat, they scored two spectacular field goals. This means Indian hockey team has tremendous potential.

Indian team will have to full steam in the next 3 matches. The opponents are not as tough as Australia, but they are only little less tough than Australia. So, matches will not be easy.Indian hockey team should take yesterday's match as a invaluable lesson, not a benchmark.

Some people are criticizing the cash awards announced after victory in first match as distraction. I do not agree. Such attractions are very important to motivate the team. The National Hockey players are not bonded laborers, they deserve rewards for good performance.

Not that unexpected result
by Abed Jani on Mar 03, 2010 07:16 AM  | Hide replies

India traditionally can not match with the pace Aussies play. India probably has the worst record against them. I haven't watched the match, but from the report it seems that even before Indian players ready to start their game, Australia took the initiative and put the match beyond them. Hope India will be able to regroup and play better in the rest of the tournament.

A poor show in this tournament means another unnecessary shake-up in the team, and most probably changing the coach etc.

Charlesworth must be a satisfied person after this win (he was very shabbily handled - as usual - by the Indian authorities when he came here as technical adviser).

Do you know Charslworth was very good Cricket player too. He was captain of Western Australia and had scored 140 n.o. against India during 1977-78 tour. :-)

Australians the many times world and olympic champions, after their shocking defeat against England, were expected to come down heavily in the next match. Unfortunately, it was against India.
