He is talking about spending money on sport infrastructure projects(stadiums, courts etc) in rural areas. Not all kinds of infrastructure like roads, highways etc.
Is Mr. Ayyar indirectly criticising Mrs. Indira Gandhi as well, who made sure that the 9th Asian Games held in 1982 at New Delhi were a great success ??

The first Asian Games were held in India, Mr. Aiyyar !! And the Prime Minister of India in 1951 was Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru !! Do you criticise Pandit Nehru as well ??

As somebody has already written in this forum, Mr. Aiyar is a good candidate to be part of debates and meaningless discussions on NDTV.

He is not criticizing anyone. He is making a point that the amounts can be better spent on children and other developmental works.

Oh is it ?? He says "....and only "evil" will patronise them" !! Is it not criticism ??
Alternatively speaking so much money is spent on pro poor and welfare schemes but a lot of it never reaches the intended beneficiaries. What about that Aiyar?
I too oppose the amount spend and ever increasing budget for common wealth games. Our country is badly hit by ever increasing prices, govt. on one hand says they are unable to provide subsidy for petroleum products and on the other hand spending near about 44000 crore for cwg. Shameful act. Both congress n BJP leaders who support this are foolish leaders.

I agree. Mr. Aiyar said the 1982 ASIAD which was a huge success, remembered even today, cost only Rs. 5 crore. So he has a valid point in what he says
Now Aiyar's name will be flashed in news headlines in the Commonwealth countries - as a rebel minister who flayed the games.
Good publicity gimmick.
Did he have the same concern when India took initiative to start Asian games or when we conducted the games in the 80s. Those days India was poorer.
Pull out non-performing ministers, corrupt ministers and officials, and unwanted govt expenditure - that will go a longer way in providing food to the poor than sabotaging the games.

nitika.your point is valid , however, large events like this also is mode of bringing money to circulation in the economy.development works lead to employment , and it supports thousands of workers. Every nation dreams of organising something to showcase itself in the world. I agree we are a developing nation , but that should not curtail our dreams of organising an event.
