Smita Kanekar
Greatest player-Pele
by Smita Kanekar on Jul 13, 2010 03:33 PM

One must read the autobiography of Pele- 'My Life And The Beautiful Game' to understand and get amazed how this man became a legend from a hopeless darkness called poverty.
From a slum kid staying near the railway line to playing a Soccer World Cup at 17 and that too for Brazil, participating in 4 WCs and winning 3. Can anyone imagine any athelete achieving this much glory?
During Pele's era, no substitution was allowed. He limped and carried on in 66 World Cup.
Let us understand all the circumstances of all the times before making a comparison!

Morning! May be, but the Golden Ball went to Diego Furlan and deservedly so. HE played superb football and conjured up magical goals. David Villa was another star performer.

thx bro. sick n tired of this year's final. South Americans play great. Don't know about Brazil this time but Argentina would have played football in the way it should be played.

Holland played a disgraceful game, rough and dirty, fouling at every available opportunity. Even Holland's greatest ever footballer Johan Cryuff blasted his fellow compatriots telling they they played vicious football.

pathetic finals. Viva Germany, Uruguay
by mohan on Jul 13, 2010 08:59 AM  | Hide replies

Germany and Uruguay won the most coveted awards, won the hearts and minds.

2 Good-for-nothing Teams reached finals, thanks to Octopus and bored the finals to death.

You are giving a great display of your understanding of football......

Better concentrate on cricket and leave the football for the people who understand the game.

This WC has revelaed that the days of icons and wozards like Pele, Maradona,Ronaldo,Roney is over. it is the abilty to pass through narrow narrow openings preferably by deflection, conserve energy by minimal running. The ball passer be like a radar guided launcher and receiver be like a homing device.Spain had superbly displayed all such qualities and deserved to be the champions. The German we said to be younger. But if you looked at their faces in the seconf half, tiredness, panting and sweating was writ large on their faces but the spainiards looked as if they had recently entered the field.
I wish to emphasise one more issue. It is better to acknowledge the names of at least one or more players near "D" who formed the link or chain of passes manifesting in the goal by the final shooter. For instance in the final, role of Fabregas and one more player I could not identify, cannot be undermined in the goal scored by Iniesta. For eg. in cricket they acknowledge names of 2 players in case of Stumping, cought out and run out.

According to me Zidna is a better footballer than either Pele or Maradona.

Simply because he has won all the major trophies, secondly, he is teh most unselfish of the above mentioned players.

If you were to make a total points earned by say 5 points for a goal and 3 for an assist, i am certian, Zidane would win hands down.

neither Rooney nor Rony( Christiano Ronaldo) deserve names beside the other 3, who have performed well for their nation. These 2 have only performed at the club level.

Not GOD's grace. The present King of Spain is living because of the generosity and graciousness of the late Spanish dictator, General Franco who sent his grandfather into exile, and ruled the country for more than 50 years, thereby weeding out nepotism, corruption, etc.

by aman bharadwaj on Jul 12, 2010 11:39 PM

this world cup hasnt been as interesting as the last 1 & even lesser than the euro2008(remember turkey).spain won by their passing prowess which sometimes is sonorific.personally,i like a goal when it is scored by a player after he has foxed 3,4 defenders or by a scorpion, bicycle or reverse kick.but we dont get 2 see such individual brilliance, nowadays.

ironically the "UNBRANDED" matches like the urugvs ghanna & urug vs germany were truly riveting.hope that the fervour created by this wc takes some time 2 die before it is gulped up by cricket again.
