@ Prakash,
Bcoz Roger's play made the opponents look like they are weak and same with Nadal.. So both are great players and their opponenets are blowed away in front of them.
BUt Roger is Simply greatest..!!!

Had Pete Sampras been born in the time period of Roy Emerson, how can one even know if would even be interested in tennis? Perhaps, he would have taken up a career in baseball or hockey!
The reason why Roger's opponents appear to be weak or inferior barring Nadal is that he makes them look that way…supreme talents....

Federer is great but not greatest
by Rahul Kumar on Jun 08, 2009 08:44 PM  | Hide replies

Ya there is no doubt regarding roger federer is one of the great players of tennis. But winning one french open title doesnot mean that he is the greatest person ever to hold a tennis raquet. His win is really applausable but he wins in the absence of nadal, if nadal was not lost his match against soderling he certainly play the final against federer. And, if federe beats nadal in the final and lift the french open trophy then he is certainly the greatest player ever hold the tennis raquet. So please stop this poll as it is too early to tell this and wait for a federer:Nadal french open final and you will get the answer that federer is greatest or not.

nadal lost to federer no.of times u better check the statistics as far as yesterday match is concerned fed won french open thats it ultimately that matters.do you think fed has to wait for nadal to come in finals or what. this is is championship players win & loose ultimately one will stand ant he is fed, there is no debate about whether he is greatest or not.do you think that french open is only for fed & nadal? grow up man....

I'd still hold Rod Lever as the greatest. He has twice won all four slams in a year and was the number one player for seven years at a stretch! The two grand slams came with a gap of 5 years - just goes to prove that he still had his hunger despite his age.
Federer is no doubt the next best, purely from his demeanor and grace. He is almost effortless in the way he wins over his opponents. In contrast Nadal is so much power and sweat. He's going to burn himself up at this rate. But, don't count him out, he's 23, won 3 out of 4 slams and the Olympic Gold (Federer may not get that!) and is an extremely dedicated bloke. I sure want to see him get close to Federer.

Mr. Kumar
You have written well but not abs. correct. Beating Nadal in the finals should not be taken the yardstick...consider other factors...the mental determination, toughness of mind esp. after Aus open finals. The entire world saying time is up for Federer...he may not even win 14 slams let alone French. So much pressure and still coming out of really tough situations during the 1st 6 match...so any game be it tennis or cricket or even life...it is not just skills but also the charater of the person, the ability to handle big pressure and the ability to perform at the right time without buckling under pressure...Federer in addition to displaying awesome tennis skills displays all these attributes which makes him the GREATEST PLAYER.

Well said Gaurav.. Over come the mental pressure and critics is very tough and Roger did that..
1. Few more to add 20 consectutive semi-final grand slams. still not satisfied..
2. since last fench open Roger placed his berth in finals (5 grand slams)...
still not satisfied... then i can say they are not having any Tennis skills

nadal is certainly not the litmus test. some people have a bogeyman. if you take that measure of greatness - nadal lost to some petty characters all along. does that mean he's a one trick pony ?

i am commenting on the poll by rediff that federer is 'greatest of all time'. One cant compare federer with McNore, agassi, samprass or many more as these players are from different era, what makes them great is he/she is best in their era and beats every opponent. Same is true for federer also, no doubt he is best in current era but failed repetedly against nadal especially on clay. Greatest player should won majority of his matches against all opponents on all surfaces isint, but my dear friend this is not true in the case of federer. Ya nadal is the litmus test for him, if he is unable to beat nadal then he is certainly not the greatest player of all time.

then what for championships ,rankings etc. all these years tennis has gone through sea change technology improved and players improved their capabilities like fitness ,mind set etc.there is no current era or previous era there is only tennis era in that era one who win more slams are greatest ever.

@ Rahul, Then why Nadal qualify on this Final..??
But fedx made into the final and won there.. so he is greatest..

Check out the head to head details between them.. Nadal won against Fedx max in clay court only..
Fedx made into the all clay finals, but lost to Nadal..
Where as Nadal made into finals in Grass / Hard courts ??

mr kuamr...your def of Greatest is very poor. Greatest doesnt mean to be GREATEST on all surfaces...it means the ability of the player to consistently beat anyone on any surface, consistent performance year on year, injured free body, winning at big stages (remember Gilchrist, Viv richards etc)and showcase artistic tennis and not wham bham thank you mam..
2008 wasn't good for Federer by his standards and thats when Nadal beat him 5 times otherwise if u see the record Federer is the one who has put brakes on his clay court records and he is only player (2007) who beat Nadal on clay 6-0 in final set in master series. So while Nadal can be the greatest on clay...the greatest allrounder and therefore greatest player.

He makes a habit of posting stats off cricinfo, and other such websites without actually understanding them.In case you have any doubt, let me predict his next quote..."Rafa's game depends on strength and stamina,he will run out of steam soon and lesser players will beat him, already after 1 year he is exhausted, blah blah"...You can see he has already said that multiple times on this very board.

Fedex has a long way to go!
by Anuraug Rathor on Jun 08, 2009 08:24 PM  | Hide replies

Here are the Rafa V/S Fedex stats-
Head to head(Nadal VS Federer)

Nadal leads 13:7...clear lead for Nadal. No excuses can cover that up.

Hard: Tied 3:3
Clay: Nadal leads 9:2
Grass: Federer leads 2:1
Indoor: Federer leads 2:0

Fedex only has a clear lead on indoor, everywhere else its neck to neck and Rafa outclasses him on clay.So he still needs to prove it against Rafa. Also clay is an integral part of tennis, every true tennis fan knows that except a few morons.

Career Singles Titles:
Federer - 58
Nadal - 36
Nadal is much junior to Fedex, so every true tennis fan would count that in except a few morons.(Like my clone)

Career Slam Singles Titles:
Nadal - 6
Federer - 13
Already half of Fedex, with an Olympic gold to boot!Impressive! Also he has beaten Fedex on all surfaces now.

Career Singles Record:
Nadal : 375 - 81
Federer : 628 - 149
Again remember that Nadal is much junior to Fedex!

Current Year Singles Record:
Nadal : 44 - 5
Federer : 31 - 6
Clear lead for Nadal! So, we must use our intelligence to analyse data, not just cut paste them on a rediff board!Hope my clone is listening.Get a brain dude.

federer has won 14 grand slams and not 13 as you think. agreed you are a great fan of rafa but please dont use false data to prove your misplaced ideas.

please also learn some addition. your figures dont match in the break down of head to head statistics of rafaVs fedex.

we'll see about that when he closes his career. people peak at different times. you are worse off comparing a single player's short career span. if you see agassi - he's spanned his career across a time frame and had his seesaw moments like no one else. people like sampras - burned bright and faded away. fedex is similar.
