really Dubai is a good place, have shiva and krishna temple and church too. its a cosmopolitan city where people live frely with full freedom. Much better better compared to India, where there is communal riots, hatredness, dirty politicians use innocent people as pans to win their dirty game. much more than everything this city as given hope to lead and support their family back home. And the crime too very less.

Absolutly right, infact same thing with same subject I was about to write and saw your comment. She is getting really unneccassary publicity. she has never gone ahead to second round in any tennis tournament and winning doubles shouldn't be considered a big achievement. There are many other sports personality like karnam malleshwai and sunita devi why Media is giving importance to only Sania, who in my opinion is useless. she stands nowhere in que of top Tennis greats. Even Venus and Serena williams must not be getting this publicity in their country.

Again I note these 'at least someone from India has done so much' messages. What done so much - I/II round losses?

Why why do we have such low standards and expectations? We're always delighted with mixed doubles and inconsequential piddling things, and keep hyping poor performances.

Girls from war torn countries, younger than Sania are in the top 3 with GSlam titles.

First Indian to do this means NOTHING in tennis and all sports. If Sania's 'achievements' are something to tom-tom, it just shows how low our standards are.

Sania
by kaushik saha on Feb 17, 2009 09:31 AM  | Hide replies

Someone below has taken his time off for mentioning a list of Sanias achievements

1. She is good looking - she has nothing to do with it

2.She is the best Indian female player - so? She is not playing in India only, she is playing a global sport. And actually we have other female players in the country who are in the top 10 in their respective sports, have won world cups and have achieved great distinctions in their respective games. So why should we not praise them and follow them as role models.

3. Her religion - isnt that a big reason why she has got so much recognition from the western (and even the Indian media). Add to that the free publicity she has (fatwa and all), so doesnt this help her cause in being in the limelight.

4. She might never win any slams / Tier 1 - wow, nice mentality. Happy to be mediocre right. We have, again female sportsmen who WIN tournaments, that too, far more physical and contact sports like boxing (why I am not naming all these female players - Mirza Bhakts, if you dont know, its your fault)

5. Only Indian woman to win a grand slams doubles title - well, we have 2 gentlemen who have won 11 and 7 grand slam doubles titles, so there are more successful tennis players than her in the country. Since we do not have another competitive female player in the country, this achievement gets more coverage.

Kaushik, Someone thought he should reply to your effort in taking time off too...lol

1) Haha, nice point. But the fact remains that she is good looking and therefore popular. Not her fault - like you say, she has nothing to do with it!!

2) Please praise the others - no one is saying no and I will join you in that praise - but don't unnecessarily criticise Sania.

3) My point exactly - religion is one of the problems - again, not her fault, she just has to live with what comes her way on that account.

4) We will disagree on this point - I consider being in the top 100 and earning crores before you are 25 to be slightly more than 'happy to be mediocre'

5) She still is the only Indian woman to have achieved this in tennis - so till there are more (whom she will have inspired), let us enjoy what there is!!

6. She earning 45 lakhs - compare it with her opponents. You cant compare this with what another Indian earns - you cant compare apples and oranges.

7. Should all of us become the CEO of the company we work in? - whats wrong in trying dude? dont justify incompetence with such stupid arguments. Anyways, the CEO earns much more (ever heard of something called the tournament model?)

7. Finally, many of us fall prey to the usual Indian crab mentality of pulling down a successful fellow-Indian - is it? then why do you think we cheer lustily when Bindra wins a gold? or Advani wins? Or Jeev wins? (btw, the last mentioned person wins much more money than Mirza, and nobody is jealous of him - so there goes your theory down the drain)

8. We cant stand a female doing well, we are MCPs - again, so why do we cheer when Koneru Kumpy wins? or Saina Nehwal? any reasons. Forget them, they are from cursed majority community. Why do we cheer when Mary Kom win? Because we are proud of them, and the fact that they dont wear those stupid T-shirts and stays humble makes them more adorable.

8. Glamour quotient and all - Heard of Maria Sharapove? Ana Ivanovic? - they are definitely more glamorous and also happen to be number 1.

9. Someone speaking of Sania not getting help, support etc - read Ivanovics story - how she practiced in an empty swimming pool. And the Govt of India have given her enough support it seems. Who else have got a Padmashri for nothing-to-write-home-about achievements?

Just tell how many female national or international sport star you know. When you start counting you will have more number of tennis player. Its commonsense tennis is popular sport world around. Check out if yuki did well he too will get more coverage compare to bindras advanis and other because no matter what there are more indian matching cricket, tennis , soccer than those who watches golf, billard/snooker , chess or for that matter boxing. Expecting Sania to win grand slam is too much however if can defiantely hope a slam soon from an Indian inspired by sania to take tennis seriously. She did to tennis what Sachin did for Cricket. So no matter what she will be remember as one of those who inspire tennnis as profession.

Forget these ladies, even in India we have Dola Banerjee, Saina Nehwal, Jwala Gutta, Jhulan Goswami, Koneru Humpy, Mary Kom, Mamta Kharab etc

Wasnt PT Usha our best ever female sportswoman? How many remember her? How much media attention did Karnam Malleswari get?

Tennis with its short-sk**ts happens to be one hell of a eye-candy. thats why it is so popular. But even then we have the Williams sisters who have won more hearts with tennis than showing-off

6. Oh we compare all the time - worse than apples and oranges - that's why my post on Sania - the point being stop comparing unfairly!!

7. She is also trying...and not becoming a CEO is not incompetence - there are other things more important!! See where she is reaching without being CEO!!

7. Oh we're cheering Bindra and Jeev too don't worry. And the jealousy point is not exclusive to money earned - what about being a woman?

8. We do? Then how come you are complaining we don't? someone said apples and oranges i believe? tennis and chess?

8. So? That does not make her less glamourous? I also mentioned she has her limits, and those are below those of Maria and Ana. So? I like the lesser limits too?

9. Did someone raise that point? wasn't me. Sania has got a lot of help from friends of the family, and is making the most of it too.

She deserves kudos, not criticism
by Rajeev Iyer on Feb 17, 2009 08:32 AM  | Hide replies

I find it amusing how many people criticise Sania Mirza - I think this is partly because we are projecting our own wants and needs on this girl. We want her to win Pattaya, we want her to win a Grand Slam, we want her to be #1 in the world, etc. I think it is also partly because of her religion which gets her critics both within and external to Islam. I also think she gets criticised because many of us are plain male chauvinists and cannot see a successful woman. Finally, many of us fall prey to the usual Indian crab mentality of pulling down a successful fellow-Indian.

But for all practical purposes, Sania Mirza is simply a super successful phenomenon. How do you define success normally. Should all of us become the CEO of the company we work in? Or is a nice fat salary, reasonable popularity, decent performances from time to time, having fun on the job, etc play a more important role? Well its the same for her.

1) She is the only Indian woman to ever feature at top 100 WTA levels.
2) Only Indian woman to regularly qualify for Grand Slams
3) Only Indian woman to win a Grand Slam doubles title.
4) She's a pretty girl with a go-get-it attitude which makes her very attractive to a whole generation, thats why she does so many ads - the companies know what they are doing and will not unnecessarily sign her up.

......cont'd

5) Why this year alone she has won close to Rs. 45 lakhs in prize money alone, and the year is only 2 months old. How many of us have earned that much in a year? in two years??? in three years?????

Therefore she is a super success - good-looking, best woman tennis player ever from India, will earn crores before she is 25......in anybody's book that is a pure definition of success.

Putting it in another manner, if someone came to me and said here's the deal - your daughter will in the next few years not win any tournament, will reach only 3-4 round in grand slams, but will earn crores of money before she is 25 and still be the best tennis player in India, will u be unhappy? I'll say no way - please bless her with that future - who cares about the tournament wins!!!!!!

So therefore, look at her properly and you see a ROLE MODEL for the Indian girl in Sania. Stop projecting your own requirements on her and enjoy the sport spectacle that she truly is. All hail Sania - we love you!!!!

In summary, we need to realise that she has her limits. She will perhaps never win a Singles tournament, never mind any singles Grand Slam, because there are limits to everyone's achievements physically, and she is at her limit.

SO WHAT?

That does not in any way take away from the fact that she is the best tennis player (woman) ever produced by India, the only one to feature in the top 100, to regularly reach grand slams, to win a doubles grand slam, etc etc, good looking, earns in crores, popular, etc etc...

Appreciate what we have rather than lamenting what we have not. No harm in wanting more, but in that process, don't miss appreciating the good that exists.

And stop projecting unreasonable demands on her, without first appreciating what she already is.

(These posts above are aimed at those who genuinely feel they should criticise Sania. For those who are doing it just for the sake of criticising / fingering (oh yeah there are tons of us indians like that only) this is my message.................(do your own interpretation)
