Great season for Rafa still.. 8 titles, two grand slam titles and two GS semis and two master series titles. plus the olympic gold…..He deserves the beach and sunshine and some rest before he takes off for the davis cup semis in madrid. He looked very tired..and y?

murray!
by narmada thampan on Sep 08, 2008 12:04 PM  | Hide replies

murray totally dominated rafa in this match.. no two bones about it..He played aggressively, going for winners when needed, but otherwise playing within control. Most players that play rafa try to hit one hard shot after another, and invariably miss. andy played intelligently, mixing up the pace and direction.
he also returned nadal’s serve better than most players, and didn’t get rattled when he lost serve. congratulations to andy for playing smart and studying rafa’s tactics to a tee. he even copied nadal’s strategy of standing back on the 1st serve and coming in on the 2nd..whtever it is, a win is a win! can’t wait to see how the final turns out….. I think he can give fedex tough time..
also, andy, seems to showing a little more self-restraint these days, bicep curls notwithstanding, although he can’t hold a candle to the way rafa and roger comport themselves..

Murray is fantastic as I posted two days ago "He can beat Nadal".
But in final Federer has too much experience of finals and knows how to handle pressure of final. So chances of Murray in final against Federer is 25-30 percent only.

One should remember that Rafa had a very long season this year and US open is the last of the Grand Slams, which has come immediately after the Olympics and the US Tour of several Masters tournaments. As Nadal made it to the Finals of almost all the Tournaments he played this year, he must have been a very tired man. Perhaps this is also one of the reasons for Rafa's defeat. All in all, an excellent year for Rafa, a very bad year by his standards (in spite of three grandslam finals and one grandslam semis) for Federer and fairly good years for Djokivic and Murray. Let us wait and see whether Federer can partially recover through a victory at US Open. Murray against Rafa was outstanding!

nadal has done enough to justify his current # 1 ranking. Whether he is able to retain it for a few weeks or a few years is another question altogether. For the moment, his achievements (if not style/technique) deserve nothing but the highest respect. any other opinion would just show ignorance and bias

I am Federer fan, but I like Nadal also. I accept this year Nadal played well than Federer. But I am against of those guys who thinks Federer era has end and he should retire now. Federer is still best. He has 1 more year to win French Open.

After beating Djokovic in the Semis at the US Open, when Federer was asked whom he would like to meet in the Finals, his answer was Nadal. This shows that Federer has greatest respect for Nadal as a Champion and he would like to meet and beat the Champion to stamp his class. Federer is not afraid of Rafa. Majority of Rafa's wins against Federer, barring this year's Wimbledon, are on Clay which is the most favourite surface for Rafa and the least favourite for Federer. Remember, Federer is having his worst year, but in spite of that he has reached one Grand Slam semis and three Grand Slam finals - better than any other player, though he has not won one yet this year. Yes, Rafa has a psychological advantage over Federer, but that does not mean Federer is afraid of Rafa, which is demeaning. Rafa is a muscalar player, while Federer is a rhythm player, a magician when on song. Two magic shots by Federer in the match against Djokivic in the Semis will always be remembered - an overhead chop (a chop similar to one employed in Shuttle and Ball badminton) on an overhead smash by Djokovic when everyone thought that the smashed ball was heading into the crowd and a backhand drop shot with lot of spin when serving for the match. These were pure magic moments and only Federer provides them. Nadal is great in his own way and may be he will go on to achieve still greater heights. But, Federer is pure magic who has already achieved legendary status and there is nothing more for him to prove!

Sorry Vasu, there is one thing that Federer must prove or give up counting grand slam titles as evidence of being the 'greatest' ever - that he can win the French Open !! The other three grand-slam surfaces are fast and, thus, similar. There are rumours that surfaces and balls are being slowed down to make tennis less of a power game. If Federer does not win the French Open then......... ????

Mr.truth and artifice: Sampras never even reached the Finals of French Open. His best showing is a single Semis at French. Borg never won US Open or Australian Open (which he seldome played). Same is the case with Federer. He is excellent on Clay when compared to many other players, including clay court specialists. Unfortunately, he is up against Nadal, perhaps the best ever on Clay after Borg. That is why, I will say that Laver is the greatest and Federer, Sampras, Borg etc. are all great Tennis players who have achieved legendary status in the game!Nadal has some distance to go before achieving this status. Yes, this year Nadal is the best.

Dear All,
Every one of you is forgetting something. If uou take Rod Lavers
's era can you show me the competition somebody like Nadal, Jokovich who are almost 75% equal to Federer. Are yaar Murray a low ranked player when compared to Nadal can serve 21 aces & 60 winners in a single match even Rod Laver would have been gaping with his mouth open. This is power Tennis and how can you compare Federer who is playing against quality opposition to Rod Laver.

imagine last 4 french open minus NADAL. Is there anybody else who can stop Federer on clay? Who said Federer is not good on clay? He is great...but unfortunately he is playing in the era of NADAL who is god of clay. I guess, the fact that Federer reached 4 consecutive french open finals itself proves that he is the greatest of all past greats!

Look guys..stop this Nadal-Federer war here. I mean, we all know Nadal is still not the best player on hard courts. He is unrivalled on clay and now on grass too. He has won 5 slams at the age of 22. Give him time. Roger is playing fantastic in this US Open, but you must admit he got a little lucky in the semi-final. Djokovic was hardly 50% fit and despite this, Roger lost a set to him. Still, he remains the favourite to win the title because its Murray's first GS final and he is bound to be nervous! As a tennis fan, I hope the match goes the distance!

Mr.Tennis, Football or whatever it is: Just one Queen's Club victory and one wimbledon victory and Nadal is unrivalled on Grass? You must be joking. Federer won 56 consecutive matches on grass, 33 of them at Wimbledon, before losing to Nadal this year. And everyone knows that this year is Federer's worst year and he is proving that he is also human. In spite of that, one Grandslam Semis and three Grandslam finals in a (bad) year is certainly good! Even Roddick said so, and asked the critics of Federer to lay off him. And Djokovic only 50% fit! When beating Roddick in the Semis he looked 150% fit. As Roddick put it, perhaps Djokivic perhaps fakes injuries, more so when he is losing. Or he is really not a very strong person physically. Whatever happens in the Finals, there is nothing more left for Federer to prove. He has already achieved greatness as a Tennis player and does not need the stamp of approval from ordinary mortals like us!

i think u need to read what i've written again

1) i used "now on grass" for nadal. in the sense, Roger has been the best on grass prior to this year. that was supposed to be understood.

2) i didnt say roger has anything to prove.

3) roger is definitely one the greatest of all time.

4) as a tennis fan, i was disappointed to see Novak lose the way he did. too bad you didnt notice that.

Federer is proving himself from 4 years consistently and have so many achievements. Nadal still to prove himself. If he maintains his number 1 position at least 2 years then we can compare him to Federer. Currently Federer is best.
