Because everytime he plays a game, he does so with the Indian flag by his side. Ask yourself this question - when was the last time you ever represented your country on the world stage for a worthwhile cause?
Please understand that Anand would be welcome with open arms in whichever country he chooses as his home, and yet he has chosen to stay with his motherland as its ambassador. Patriotism is not about standing in front of big crowds and delivering speeches, it is in all the little things that makes us countrymen proud of such a son of India.

ANAND is still a citizen of India. But he resides in Spain with his wife Aruna since more than 6 years, as there the chess circuit is at its busiest and as the majority of events happen in Europe its convenient for him to train and live in Spain. He was also conferred the Jameo do Oro, Spain's highest civilian award given to a foreigner in 2003.

If you put people under this kind of scrutiny, you will realize you can only be proud of stupid middle class people who have not been able to escape to greener pastures.

Anand played for India and NOT for spain. He is just staying in spain because most of the chess matches are held in Europe.

Very Good Question Arun. I think Rediff should Answer this Question. Raghavan
Dear Mr. Anand, you have been a great source of help and inspiration to me for the past 25 years. I have been keeping a close watch on your performance for the past 25 years. Our countries economy had seen some turbulent years and this reflected on our finances and overall happiness. Any good show from great players like you, always provided hopes for us, which was crucial for us as we moved from controlled economy to liberalized one.
All the sportsmen have a lot to learn from Anand. His consistency is the hall mark. Whole India is proud of our chess prodigy. Anand deserves another grand reception like last year when he arrives back in India. This is a bigger win as Anand has dominated the Russian throughout the match. Thw win of Kramnik in 10th game shows that the Russian tried his best but ultimately bowed his head to the ultimate ruler of chess world Vishvanathan Anand. Anand also played a well thought out strategy of keeping Kramnik guessing in preparation by loosing at the previous tournament at Bilbao one month back and then playing d4 opening in 5 matches.
Unfortunately We Indians don't realise the value of thsi Victory. In Spain , where Anand stays ,he has already been given the Highest Honour,Whereas In India our Indian Prime minister is still thinking whetehr to Congratualte him
