Anju: you are good for nothing
by Aon Maon Chaon on Mar 18, 2008 12:15 AM  | Hide replies

Anju has not given anything significant to India till now. So stop barking and do your job. I know the news after Beijing Olympics will read "Anju did a great job, highest jump of her life and stood 6th or 7th". PTU has given lot of medals to India. You may be partially right saying that she may not be world class athlete because she also didn't get any medal in Olympics ever but still her contribution is much more than you. Let your performance speak and not you. By the way I think only Raghvendra Singh Rathore is world class because he has won the only individual medal in Olympics ever. Nobody else is world class anyway.

Hey Krish

I am talking about less known people who made a mark in the world of sports. Leander and Mahesh were world number one. They are pretty known. They are world figure anyway. I was talking only about those people who are less known, got it? By the way Leander won a Bronze in 1996 and that shows that he wasn't a world class individually. Leander is world class only in doubles.

Perspective
by Gaurab Sengupta on Mar 18, 2008 12:09 AM

I don't think it's proper to take names here, but I also think it's about time Indians stopped accepting "came fourth" and "crashed out in the 3rd round" and "bronze medals" as achievements. Sure, these too need to be appreciated, but with the right perspective.

Only then can we expect to raise our standard. After all, the saying "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar" is much more than just the title of a movie!

Anju

Anju after this comments I think I have started hating u more. I have seen ur performance on field. It is pathetic. You and ur hubby behave on field like ur acting in a love story and not on a sport's ground.

First improve urself and then comment on someone like PTU. Everybody knows how great she is and which she proved with her words again and u proved how mean u r.

So stop spending more time with ur hubby and work hard.

whats the brouhaha about?
by ax dx on Mar 17, 2008 11:58 PM  | Hide replies

it is readers who have to grow up. some clever reporter asks a question and it is answered in a particular context. then it is quoted completely out of context to give it a wrong meaning. rediff has of late mastered this by having catchy headings that hve no relevance to the content of the story. if anju just says that her role model is xyz and that does not happen to be usha, whats wrong? insulting and belittling her achievements will of course be wrong as usha undoubtedly is great. and pls remember, this anju won a medal in world championships and they are as tough as olympics. now saying milkha was not world class is also plain wrong as he broke world record when he came 4th; his misfortune 3 other people did better that day. any athlete knows that so obviously this is a case of misreporting.

achievers in world championships
limba ram -- world no 1, 3 time winner. olm-- 1988 got 128 rank out of 128 contesters.
archury-- india has 42 time winner in diff catt. but no one has intered even in final round in olm. games.
weight lifting-- 18 world champion ships 12 records -- 1 olympics medal.
shooting winers for several years 10 world record holders 7 rank one plyers..1 medal( even he was ranked 1 got 2nd ther)

it is an endless list for informations when anju won bronze most of top ranked players was not there. the same
what helped P T U got 4th in oplm.
it shows indians are having talent but failed at the time when it requires the most..
hope this time we do well as atleast 6 world record holders are going.

Let Anju prove it.
by Rohit on Mar 17, 2008 11:47 PM

Most of the comments below say that "Anju hasn't grown as tall as Usha." I agree. Because, I believe it is important NOT to undermine what others have achieved. Usha is really tall in my eyes.

Maybe, it's our fault. Maybe Anju is going to take Indian Athletics higher. Maybe a medal in Olympics!!

A medal in Olympics (for a start) is what it will take Anju to keep up to her "world class" standards.
