fedex-smpras

Pete sampras was a fantastic player. He conserved his enrgy for a specific time in each match. For the rest of the match he would serve great and play within his limitations; no dashing around for the darting ball, no divings and no fuss at all when 4-4 in the set he would unleash a couple of his big, incrdible running forehands and the set will be in his bag.In several matches with Ivonosevic all statistics like 1st service, winners at net, service returns etc etc were in favor of goran, but sampras had won the match. Such was his composure. And Federe makes it look like just he is from another planet. the opponents are fighting with swords while he has some laser beam equipment. But I think the circuit has better players in sampras era. It is not only just the nmaes were bigger but, Agassi, Ivanasvic, becker were better players. Its very good that Jokovic, Nadal and a few other really good players come around. For me I donot know who the better player is but my vote goes to Sampras.

Those who could see federer entering the arena follwing Djokowitch would have immediately noticed his face dull and disprited. Having maintained his No1 position after the QF, I for one would think that he was already tired after facing 5 setters, and he preferred losing to No 3 in the Semis than to No 38 in the final! It was written large on his game by the second set.An unpleasant record would have got created in the books if he had to lose to No38. Had there been Nadal in the final I think we would have seen a different Federer.

He is one of the best Tennis player ever living.
One thing commendable is his temparament, poise and dignity never changes. He has no antics or tantrums in defeat or victory. He lets his racquet talk than otherwise. Reminds me of Bjorn Borg. Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl. Gentlemen of the Game.

I would like to put some of the greats of different sports.

Federer - Tennis
Sachin - Cricket
Mike Jordan - Basket Ball
Tiger woods - Golf
Pele - Soccer
Prakash/Hartono - Badminton

I am sure there are many talented sportsmen & women out there..but when the people above play it is like music to your ears and you are mesmerised by their sheer brilliance and the mastery over their game. Having said that...they are humans after all and tend to err or lose concentration and they move on. I am sure he will be back with a bang and will win more titles and will treat us with his artistry.

federer's loss is like australia losing a series final or a match..it happens rarely.. but tennis is getting tougher every yr.. unlike cricket..n to be on top with such dominance for so long in this era is itself a miracle..
many players have had big wins like these.. but to win many slams n cups over the yrs n be no 1,. is an entirely different thng...
Yes,, in this day n age ,fedex has created a huge monster....his record is his ultimate opponent now.. just like sachin or any legend..

just great records don't make gr8 players.. its the humility after a loss or gr8 sporting spirit after a defeat makes them respectable... n fedex is one of the best playres in history in that regard.. win or loss .. for his stature. he's a role model... unlike the australian cricket team

by Nalin Kumar C.B. on Jan 25, 2008 09:55 PM  | Hide replies

He lives in the era where no one is better than him.Even the retired Pete Sampras had defeated Federer very easily.
Sampras is far better than Federer as he had to play against Jim Courier, Stefan Edberg, Michael Chang, Mark Philippose, Boris Becker, Goran Ivanisevich and all.All other players are very tough fighters too.But now a days in Federer era there is no one is giving him a challenge except rafel Nadal. It is very disappointing.

What you guys and girls say?

Pete is Great among world class players. Federer is great among ordinary tennis players

tennis is getting tougher n too competitive every yr.. unlike cricket where nothing's changed since yrs..
the life cycle of a player at the top is getting shorter.. thanks to intense competition.. n for fedex to be on top for so long itself is an achievement..
many players win some big matches n a few events.. but just fade away..

It would have been beter if you knew Roger had beaten Sampras when he was reigning Wibledon Champion.
and you talk about the exhibition matches haha.
and considering the fact that surfaces have become incredibly slow at Melbourne park and Wimbledon, I would imagine sampras winning only at US open.

I think Federer is one among the top class players of any era. I absolutely dont think pete sampras wud have been any match for this guy. How many times u have seen pete return at almost 90 deg and leave the other player just wondering the angle of it rather than trying to go for it? For someone with such talent i think he well deserves the world no1 status for a long time. Roger Federer is the worlds best right now. Kudows to him.

Pete Sampras was a great player ...probably the best the world has seen but Federer is still in his hey days and is looking strong....one loss cannot decide how great a player he is...and you talk about competition that sampras had to face well...philipousis and chang come no whr near to Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic...It is federer's class that makes us think that Nadal and Djokovic don't give him tough competition..

Pete Sampras was quite good. But he could never perform well on clay. Pete was never in 10 consecutive finals. Pete was quite good but Federer is on another planet. Even Pete has said so.

It is difficult to compare people across generations. The nvironment changes and so do other factos like equipment, pressure etc etc .. I don't think that competition is less intense now , it is only that Federer has dwarfed most of them. I thought that Sampras was extremely strong on grass and his serve gave him a huge advantage there ...I would put him above Federer at Wimbledon . It would have been a good fight at the hard courts between the two but I think that Federer is definitley ahead on clay. Federer 's all-round game is probably classier than Sampras who I thought was a bit dependent on his serve (which I rank to be the best and the most consistent among the people that I have seen)

I think you would have told the same thing for Pete Sampras when he was in top form... You would have said some other player was gr8 and Sampras was not gr8. Always trying to bring a person down...

Backhand make the difference
by vimal viswanath on Jan 25, 2008 09:15 PM  | Hide replies

Djokovic has a better Backhand compared to Federer
He forced a lot of errors with his forehand too
His huge first serves were too much for federer

I think the only thing federer need to work is his backhand...He plays a more defensive backhand when compared to Djokovic,Nadal,Tsonga ...

Hope that he will fight back

federer is the best tennis player ever to play the game. we all have to b really proud to say that we r in the era of FEDERER.
but all the credit goes to Novak as the way he tried to bring down the master.
think this makes FEDERER come back really hard and once again he'll raise the bar for the rest to catch him.

Fed is phenominal.
