India in Olympics
by Rajeshwar on Aug 23, 2008 06:14 AM  | Hide replies

If we consider the number quarter final losses along with the medals won this time in Beijing Olympics, we can perform much better with right selection of the events and of course if only strong infrastructure and proper care and support to sports by the Govt.

What right selection, Rajesh? when nepotism stalks something rotten in our state & cricket-craze rues our easily-pleased populace. Learn from China and Jamaica...both extremes in the population-chart.

by garima kapoor on Aug 23, 2008 05:51 AM

our winner athletes should be given platinum medal instead of gold/silver/bronze given the apathy of the govt towards the all the sports except cricket of course!!

Rejoicing small things

India has never won these many medals in any olympics. Hats off for the medalists and those who came close to it.
If only all the unaccounted money that many spend on frivolous activities is spent on sports, this will be much better.
Abhinav Bindra's family had to spend 10 crores for one medal. This surely says something outrageous about our system.
Performance in academics alone is given importance by the middle class. Almost all our sports stars have had an alternate career until they have firmly estabished themselves in sport.
examples. S Venkatraghavan was an engineer with SPIC. EAS Prasanna was an engineer as well. Kris Srikkanth was an engineer. Sunny Gavaskar was with Nirlon. Many of our women athletes are with railways or Air India. Except Vishwanathan Anand, everybody has been employed.
If sports could be a separate career and a lucrative one at that, there will be lot more motivation for the 0.5 billion strong middle class will wake up to a new career option.

Indians simply lack motivation to take up sports. Performance such as this can motivate more people. This alone can wake up the sleeping elephant and trample over other countries in sports.

Laloo, announced an award of 55lacs to Sushil post winning the medal....but what was he doing before Sushil won the medal??
Did'nt Laloo realize that an Arjuna Award winner can be a good prospect for the Olympics....
Ppl like Laloo just want to make money and get a piece of the winning cake....
Somebody get these trash bags out of Indian politics...

Rewarding after the performance is far better. Laloo did the right thing.

There are many Arjuna awardees in India, but look at where they are at the world level. How many Arjuna awardees are realistically medal prospects at the Olympic level?

With 20-20 hindsight, it is always easier to criticize!
