We can%u2019t blame
by sushanth perukkanchery on Aug 09, 2008 02:45 PM

Let us dream for gold. A hopeless hope….
How is it possible with out changing our attitude and sporting culture?
Remove all politics from sports. Otherwise we‘ve no hope. Sports not for job it should be our life.
It’s our fault not them. So we’ve no rights to blame

My question to ALL
by Rahul Verma on Aug 09, 2008 02:26 PM  | Hide replies

I agree that we might not win even a single medal in olympics but I want to put across a question to all fellow Indians.
How many of you would allow your childern to take sports as a career instead of studying medical/engineering/computer science etc?? When we focus SO much on acedemics and gives a damn to any sports except cricket, we should not eb expecting medals in a highly competitive event like Olympics. In China, US or Russia, kids start practising with professional coaches since their early years and they make their country pround as they have spent many years sweating during practise. You should not expect an 18yr old to start practising swimming and winning an olympic gold with 2-3 yrs of practise. This requires constant and long haul like the chinease, russians, autralians do.
Lets not focus ONLY on acedemics and allow kids to choose and be serious with a sport of his/her choice. I hope in the coming years, we will start becoming more competitive in big events and may win a few medals.

Its not matter of choosing sports as a profession..its matter of pride and passion which we indians don't have as compared to foreigners..Most of them play sports for passion not for money..we india first consider money then choose sports and thats where we fail to deliver!

In primary school education all children should be treated alike. Their Schooling should be of Uniform type and should be taken care by the Government. Schooling should inculcate skills of reading, writing, knowing the enrvironment around and lots of physical activities. The Nutritional requirements should be taken care of by the school itself. Schools should have good gymnasiums and play grounds apart from class rooms. Teachers should be paid well. Good salaries will attract Intelligent people to take to teaching profession. A good childhood will result in healthy mind and body resulting in competant people. Hope this will ensure lots of medals to us in International events.

Now schools are allowed to operate even without a proper ground to play. They operate only with class rooms. It is pathetic.

This is just an excuse. There are countries who are underdeveloped(Kenya, Jamaica to name a few) but they also produce gold medallist without any infrastructure support.

Point taken, but those athletes were not forced into studies. Moreover, those guys have excelled in track and feild events like sprint, marathon, steeple chase etc. Not to discount their efforts but I think they have much better endurance levels than atheletes from any other country.

Hi Maneesh, he is not talking about the infrastructure, but about the people mentality. Even without an infrastructure, one can win if he has a proper guidance and emotional support. We dont do that either and out of a blue moon, if we expect them to win, who can???

We all want our kid to become, what we couldnt become, but we dont even realize as what they want to become.

My younger cousin is a school dropout (4th standard) but he is a zonal hockey captain for under 12 and I am proud very much of him...

The thing is not about infrastructure. It is about the competitive mentality. Maneesh is right. What infrastructure we need to run? Our culture does not produce such people. Anjali's 493/500 is definitely good. But that kind of score put her at 29th place or so.

It is the middle class mindset you are talking about. Middle class hardly makes 30% of the population. It is not fair to blame the middle class only. Education is the only way to survive or excel is the middle class mantra. They are doing a very good job in that respect.

India is full of contradictions. This just just one of those. No need to feel any shame, I guess.

let me give some reality check. we have got 57 great players out of 1.15 billion. Well, thats a great start. (I know its easy to sit at home and write this stuff) but 57 that is pathetic. we have got 4 swimmers who will get out in first heat. Our athletics team will get out in the first leg or heat. Dont expect any miracles from sania. Leander paes is well past his best. (but i do respect him a lot. he plays his heart out.)Dont expect anything from the shooters. they are good only in the commonwealth games. so we are left with the pugilists(boxers). well we have got cubans, koreans, kazakhs, thais and many more. Let me give one more shock. Does anyone remember 1990 beijing asian games. do you know how many gold medals did we win in that ASIAN GAMES. Just ONE. that too in KABBADI. This beijing could turn out to be a jinx for us. just like the finals for the indian cricket team. I am hoping another barcelona this time. Still all the best to my countrymen. Any takers?
