biggest villain
by Frank Opinion on Sep 27, 2007 11:01 AM  | Hide replies

more than the politicians, the biggest culprit is KPS Gill for the way he has run and ruined the indian hockey. people like & follow cricket and that's why there is more money for cricketers from commercial houses. it is as simple as that. do scotland cricketers get more money than their soccer players? let kps gill win a world cup and still if money does not come then we will see. IHF and players should win regularly and arouse public interest. last but not the least, i dont think any money was given to cricketers when ever they won asia cup in cricket.

I agree.Sports and sport persons are equal. They should not discrimiate.Just now they won asia cup. They deserve cash awards as like cricketers. If do like this, they will lose their heart.Country will not improve in sports.I completely agree with the hockey coach. AT LEAST NOW HTE GOVT AND POLITICIANS SHOULD UNDERSTAND AND RESPECT ALL THE SPORTS AND SPORT PERSONS ARE EQUAL.GIVING 5 LAKHS TO ONE SPORTS AND 2 LAKHS TO OTHER SPORTS.PLS DONT DO THAT AND DONT SPLIT THE SPORTING COMMUNITY

Hockey the National Game, Cricket the Popular Game

Indian Team is rewarded not for winning Asia Cup... but they are the World Champions & in their Journey they have beat the current champions and top ranked team in One Day & Test Australia too ... Organise a Cricket Match and a Hockey Match in 2 Stadium within a Kilometere area and see the response that will tell the story ... show our Indian Team members photographs to an age range of 3-100 year old group most of them will identify atleast a few ... try the same with Hockey Players... Its the peoples trust and belief in a Team and a game ... Chakde India.

This is totally absurd, everyone knows that cricket is more popular than hockey.. As far as Government is concerned, it is their responsibility to treat each and every sport as equal. Just by looking at the crowd you cannot say like that. Infact, Hockey is a national game. Even, it needs encouragement from Government.

here is the better comparison betn hockey and cricket:

--hockey is a power sports, whereas cricket is sluggish sports.

--hockey is played actively in 10 times the country play cricket.

--hockey is our national game. we shud respect it, as we respect national flag and song.

--hockey is played in olympics.. and we have bring the maximum medal in hockey only

PS: hamare hockey mein chakke nahi hote

attacker,

I totally agree with you.

I think cricket will lose its shine, say in another 5 to 6 years. Fast games like hockey, football, volleyball and basketball will be preferred over cricket, as happened in west Indies. West Indies cricket has lost their good heighted people to some of the above sports. The same will happen to India one day. Eagerly waiting for that day to come.

the hockey team won without losing a single match. as for the difference between winning teh asia cup and the world cup, cricket is played in only a few countries in teh world. so its not that difficult to become world chapms. but hockey is played in more countries.secondly, no one is objecting to the BCCI giving money to cricketers. but why should state governments give them money when these palyers have already got so much money? its a question of priorities.moreover, when u speak of national integration on one hand, isnt it ironical that regionalism is being promoted by states giving awards to their own players? am also disappointed that not even one of the cricketers has come out in support of the hockey players or given even one percent of his prize money to charity despite getting so much money!!

Ooh so guys its the jeolousy factor...you are worried with their income....Just because Bangladesh is beaten 20 - 0 it does not mean we are a good team. What are our results with Australia,Germany,Holland,Spain etc....Check and revert...you will be shocked....Volleyball is played in 220 countries, and Football in far less...But inspite of that it is Football that is considered the most popular game....If you dont like cricket just turn off you TV for god's sake..

PS You guys are lucky that India did not get to host the Champions trophy...this year after Pakistan was ruled unsafe.....If your heroes had played there......

I being a national Baseball player have seen the disparity between cricket and baseball a nd all other games in India...But I also understand that to gain the public's attention you cannot beg.. you have to have results...World Cup Wins%u2026.
Most non cricketing sportsman in our country have an inferiority complex and blame all their ill%u2019s on Cricket...Till that attitude does not change.... they will wallow in their self pity and nothing else...

Chill relax...dont be jealous of Cricket.

its their right not jealousy... its same as we raise fingers for the income of politicians. is that too jealousy?

they r asking now, bcoz govt have never wasted so much money like that before...

they r national heroes and desere much more...

btw, hamare hockey mein chakke nahi hote

and fyi, asia cup in hockey is more competitive than world cup in cricket...

and they didn't won by luck as in cricket.. they won strongly by beating their opponents with 16-0, 11-0 goal scores... understand?

Just shows how much you understand sports....They havent won a MAJOR, I mean MAJOR international tournament in donkey's years..If you take out the 1980 Boycotted Moscow Oylmpics,I think they may have last won the Olypicsin 1964 or 1968...what kind of heroes are you talking about.....
Simply pathetic....and BTW just wait for the next A grade tournament like the Champions Trophy,Olympics or World Cup...Then lets see your heroes perform.....,not winning some B grade Asia Cup where they did not even play Pakistan...

Mate - the logic is simple. The last time they won a major Hockey tournament was ages back. Unfortunately that is the way the world works wherein there is one hell of a lot of disparity. One cannot help but live with it or go out and prove the world wrong by doing something extra special - unfortunately, Indian hockey has not won any great accolodates and when I say that a win in Asia Cup is not 'great'.
We had one Mr. Limba Ram a few years ago who was considered next to Arjuna in archery. But, what happened??? Our guy got darted and thrashed like hell when exposed to the entire world.
In cricket, even though the number of countries playing it are less, we are the numero uno in the world when it comes to 20-20 cricket - it is a fact and it will remain a fact till someone else clinches the cup next time.
There is difference in climbing mount everest (everyone remembers Edmund Hillary and Tensang Norgay) and other smaller mountains in Himalayas.
This is true for sports as well - whether it is a game of chakkas or dandas

I too got dismayed the way the other sports are treated so I am loosing interest in cricket as it is bullying the nations youth.
I think first we citizen should start respecting all sports then it eventually make politicians too give attention as their main criteria is the vote bank which internally triggers all sponsors and business man to involve.

Sunil

Its a shame that our national game is treated like this. Though we are already ashamed of our politicians but even the sponsors are biased. I thing the cricketers should also go on strike for their fellow sportsmen and sportswomen. They should not be selfish and should support the other sports too. I want to know how many of these cricketers congratulated the Hockey team, football team, volleyball team and Vishwanathan Anand on their victories. Please spend the people of India's money towards all the sportsmen and sportswomen. We would be happy if all are treated equally.

Why Hockey lost to Cricket

It's all about format of the game. Both Soccer and Hockey do not get patronage from corporate becoz they cant advertise during the match whereas in cricket they can do between overs, wickets etc.Cricket is sluggish game whereas Soccer and Hockey need stamina and power.

Hi,
by SHRIKANT IYER on Sep 27, 2007 10:07 AM

The hockey players should be definitely upset that their performance is not valued as the performance of cricket. Its that the governament is trying to tax every common man to generate revenue to be distributed among sectors profitable to their own pockets & not to the nations treasury. By anoouncing rewards of crores only to the cricketers games they have definitely proved it.

Might be it is bcoz they never knew about the intensity of awards being given away for any sport...! might be they havent heard about such prize amount for any game since India never won any world cup... after 83..! Its the lakhs n crores they cud see that was being given for a rare victory and the same expectation for the hockey team aroused too....!
Mr. Palani, I have a Qs for u..! Assume that if u had a twin brother..! and u had been topping ur school often.. leaving ur bro way behind...! & suddenly one day ur bro tops the school and he is rewarded handsomely... and lot of fame is being spread around..! u wud be have definitely felt bad for the treatment towards u in the past..! perhaps u cud have also asked for the same previously...! ain't it? Whatever no offense meant but the statement is very true that its a step motherly treatment..! and the only reason for this is politicians...! These demons always try to eat up the credit wherever public gets leaned..!

by raja ram on Sep 27, 2007 10:01 AM

This is certainly a ridiculous situation. I agree that even hockey players shud be given the same treatment as cricket players...
Since cricket is generating more revenue in india than hockey, hockey players must not be discriminated like this!
