Vishwanathan Anand is winning the World Championship this Sunday
by Antistupidity on Sep 27, 2007 12:42 AM  | Hide replies

Ok so come Sunday we will most probably know for sure that V Anand is the new World Chess Champion. He already is the #1 player in the World as per FIDE rating points. He is currently leading the World Championship with 3 rounds to go and has a great chance of winning the World Cup.

There will be no politicians holding felicitation ceremonies for him.
There will be no ticker tape procession for him.
There will be no cash awards announced, no sports car, no house.
I trust there will be a few mandatory congratulatory messages from the PM, etc.

The media will make a small mention of it somewhere in passing between their massive coverage of Shah Rukh Khan's latest and MS Dhoni being felicitated by Jharkhand politicians.

And the blissfully ignorant Indian Sports Fan will let this moment of glory for Anand and India blow away in the wind while he chases after a Sreesanth wide or after Sania Mirza's skirt.

Thankfully guys like Anand are too resourceful to let that bother them. They have learned to be satisfied with the adulation the Chess community and a few sports fans give them. Why - he does not even stay in India any more. Yes he might feel a tinge bad that he has achieved much more than the overhyped cricket team yet gets a fraction of the treatment, but then he is too mature to let that bother him. Well done Anand - some day history will list you as one of the pioneers who laid the foundation of a sporting culture in India. Go man Go - you rock!!!

enticejuan! why r u always discouraging or cornering other sports. No one is blaming on cricket players, but these board, sponsors, government and politicians they need to respect other games also. they have to recognise other games. it is also the people and media to focus and encourage other sports. This much huge cash rewards? entire indian hockey history couldnt have seen this much. but indian players took it in just 13days play. This much spending in a single sport is not good for a developing country where we have to achieve more and more in many fields, where farmers dying in draughts and hunger. Give that money to a good industrialist or revolutionary people like swaminathan who is working hard to take agriculture(backbone of india) to a greater heights. jaihind.

If it is all about popularity... Then let's change our national game to Cricket and not Hockey. Bcoz if we do not respect our national game or cannot support the players of our national game then it's a shame for us.

We will watch whichever sport we like and give it more importance . the bottomline is that cricket is much more popular than hockey . so all here who are talking against cricket are narrow minded morons

if we support only cricket, then we will never win any olympic medals ... look at china ... they have so many medals.

we have a great chance of winning an olympic medal in hockey... so corporates should also support hockey

No, because of nonsense morons like you India is nowhere in the sports map in the world. Be a frog in a well that you are world champion in a game whose world consists of eight colonial countries. In Olimpic zero, in world soccer zero, in athletics zero, in other sports zero apart from some individual efforts. This is because of you morons who don't support anything but cricket. What a hell for a country of one billion.

seeing the responses, i think it'll be fair if the govt sends a routine congratulatory message to all the sporting bodies for achievements rather than giving cash awards.

comeon guys......

people here once again are showing their crab mentality. if you cannot be successful then stop others from being so. CArvalho made his message clear on various channels and everyone took it seriously. now that is fair enough. he was sporting enough to give credit to the cricketers. but going on a hunger strike shows how weak you are. just go out there are keep on winning trophies. if you won the Asia cup without any support, you can win the world cup too. go out a win the world cup and the politicians will stand behind you wagging their tails.

another point is that there is no use of blaming cricket and trying to belittle cricket citing that its not a world game. its not a world game but neither is hockey. soccer is the only world game. also cricket has achieved the glamour status thanks to some brilliant marketing by BCCI. famous ad personality Latika Sarma called upon the respective federations of hockey and football to market the games well among the masses and make a good appeal. only then the adwallahs will come looking for your dates.

Soccer s the nuber 1 sport in England and yet their cricketers never complained. when they won the Ashes they got a brilliant reception. for a short while Flintoff was more popular than Rooney. our hockey team has to learn from this instead of standing and whining.

please find me a country where hockey is the number 1 sport. it'll never be number 1 anywhere. but still the govts need to be fair to every sport.

none of the indian get millenium sports award in the year 2000... isn't it shameful for the nation of 1 billion public...

hockey is actively played in 10 times the countries play cricket.. hockey is a global sports but not as popualr is world no. 1 sport, football..

inspite, of lack of scope, money, and support frm media and public, they bring glory to the nation with their hard work and sportsmanship...

competition in hockey asia cup is more than a cricket world cup...

prasanth read article with open mind, no one is blaming cricket.. they r blaming govt, and media for their biasness..

we, as the citizen of india have the responsibility to respect our players and motivate them.. but we always fail to do so...

thr is no marketting needed for sports awareness in india.. sports shud b in the blood of real man.. sports is the synonym of men-hood and its shameful we indians r loosers in sports world...

here is the comparison betn hockey and cricket:

--hockey is a power sports, whereas cricket is sluggish sports.

--hockey is played actively in 10 times the country play cricket.

--hockey is our national game. we shud respect it, as we respect national flag and song.

--hockey is played in olympics.. and we have bring the maximum medal in hockey only

PS: hamare hockey mein chakke nahi hote

Its all about popularity. How many people know the rules of Hockey and how many people has played / playing Hockey.

You cannot ask recognition like that. Can you ask Lakhs of people to see you in the road (as it is seen today) ?

suman, read article carefully.. they r asking govt, not the public for their biasness.

why u people r proud of ur non-patriotic habit.. we fail to motivate our players.. we fail to support them.. inspite of that, they bring glory to the nation..

its our responsibility to praise them...

we dont care abt our real heroes... hockey players, army men etc.. who shed their life for nation..

its really shameful on the part of indian public... suman, u shud b ashamed of what u said.. u dont deserve to b an indian...

The Indian MEN's Hockey team should be more worried about a very grave danger to their game.

And it is not Cricket.

Ever since the success of SRK's 'Chak De India', many people have started associating hockey with female sports.

If the Men's team wants to retain whatever self-respect or pride it may have left, they better start playing well and promoting it as a strong Men's sport!

If the trend continues, the members of Men's team may find themselves modelling for female hygiene products!!!

If Cricket is religion for some than Hockey is religion for some.
You cannot have discrimination between the majority and minority.
So all the sport must be respected. And all the sports must get equal share.
Irrespective of one enjoy watching any particular game. One must not treat embarrassingly to one%u2019s community to which they do not involve with them stay ignored. That%u2019s where the reservation starts from for such thinking. Nation pride is huge when all the community living in one nation will prosper then one.
