This is so bad , we make so much of noise for not allowing any other sport to excel. And dont even allow there success stories to feature. Today I saw TOI did not even bothered to cover ther success on front page neither rediff. I saw yesterdays match , it was good and indian really nailed korian in every part of the game.

Fedrer and his wins
by Lakshmi Rajesh on Sep 10, 2007 12:09 PM  | Hide replies

He is great player and congrats to him. Wish there is omebody who gives him a proper fight. But he does not have the kind of opponents that Becker,Sampras or Agassi had.

Nevetheless, he is simply too GOOD and deserves every win.

In 90s, when everybody used to compare Ivan Lendl or Stefan Edberg with Pete Sampras, people used to say that Pete does not have the kind of competition Edberg faced. Edberg had Lendl, Becker, Wilander, Courier among others as competitors. Lendl had it worse, he had to face John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Connors, Wilander, Edberg, Becker and Pat Cash among others. Pete never had such competition. He had a very inconsistent Agassi when he was in peak. He had Michael Stich, Thomas Muster, Goran Ivanisevic, Tim Henman - hardly the players whom u can compare with the great Becker or Mats Wilander.

Now same thing is happening with Federer and Sampras. After 10 years, some new guy will be winning everything and people will say, he never had to face the likes of Roddick, Nadal, Djokovic, Blake, Baghdatis, Hewitt, Safin, Davydenko because by then these guys will look like great players.

My take is DO NOT COMPARE players from different eras. Go by the premise that the tennis talent pool more or less remains the same. The more slams/titles u win, the greater you are. Go Fed Go!!!

if Federer and Agassi had played at same time Federer would have won all his matches with him like how he dominates Roddick. Sampras v/s Federer I can't tell but it definitely does'nt mean that Sampras will hold an edge, we simply dont know and it is futile to compare. If Federer wins more than 14 or if Federer wins all the french open, he is greater than Sampras period. Players like Stefan Edberg don't even come into the picture.

hai never say that.. do you mean to say that Nadal, Djokovic, ferrer ,bhagdatis, roddick are bad players.. its only fed ex supremacy..that he treats them like a mellowed cat. consider Sampras( my another favorite)- it was agassi, chang, ivanisevic, marcelo rios, becker, greg resueski, pat rafter(big serve man)..its same..its difficult to compare.. each time had their own season of opponents. Federer is so ruthless that you tend to undermine others..

Mr. VH: Your comparison is totally off the mark. During his prime Amritraj used to be the A of ABC (AMRITRAJ, BORG AND CONNORS)True he could not win many titles but still he always fought for India. Federer of course is a giant but do not ridicule others just to show Fed's greatness. This is not sporting.

Agreed Federer is a great player, but I think there are no great serve and volley players, like Becker, Sampras, Edberg or a complete player like Agassi around to trouble him. Otherwise it would not have been so easy for him.

He is playing at the right time. At the same time you can't take anything away from him. Hats off to Federer.

RE:GR8 Federer

number of grand slams won is the best measure else there is no end to speculation. Would Sampras have beaten Borg with wooden rackets if Sampras had played in late 70s? who knows. Serve and Volley is a dying art and there is no need to compare Federer with serve and volley players. And btw Agassi lost most of his matches with Sampras. So Agassi should not be in the all time greatest player list. Also it should be noted that Roddick serves quicker than Sampras, he regularly reels off 145-150 mph serve. The key thing in common between Federer and Sampras is both play the big points well.

A Great Player - A True Champion
by prakash mohanasundaram on Sep 10, 2007 10:36 AM  | Hide replies

Federer is a true champion. It was in a sense a very good match. I see messages that say Federer was not at his best or Djokovic is only a hype.

There are two factors - Federer did not completely dominate this tournament like he has done in the past - He dropped two sets enroute which made a few believe that he might not win the tournament. Dropping 2 sets according to Roger's Standard can be considered bad, but thats the mark of a great champion - In form or Out of form, he still wins. This is what seperates the men from the boys, professional from amateur or a great player from a legend. You gotta hand it to the man.

Djokovic - has had a fantastic year so far, he has the talent and the will to be with the best.Hes just 20 - so dont be too critical on him. Remember Fed was 21 when he won Wimby in 2003. So remember this is just the beginning of djokovic for a fantastic career - provided he stays fit and focussed. Fed has been on tour for almost a decade, Joker has just started a couple of years back. So no real comparisons yet!!!!. The kids gotta an amazing talent and a good sense of humour. His imitations are worth watchin again and again
