There's enough talent with us to conduct F1 and similar infrastructure-intensive events. I don't think anyone will doubt that. But there are a couple of bottlenecks.
First, think if the IOA is capable of handling such an event. It's past record is not something to brag about. If the event were to be handled by a private firm, most probably, it'll be a success. But you know Suresh Kalmadi and other politicians will never be able to make it a success because there's so much politics involved.
Second thing: Does India really need it? How many people will be able to watch it from the stands? Will there be profit(not some small amount boss) for the organisers(afterall it's a business for Bernie)?
Time will answer. But I really don't think it will happen in 2009.

I dont understand why lots of people are negative about the whole thing. Does India really need it...well does India need a bunch of mad characters playing cricket...the mad indians like us who watch the game..are we earning any revenue...no right...?? then why cricket...its the same way for F1...maybe ya no industries will directly earn from this...but indirect earnings outweigh it. if we keep thinking does India need it, then we will never even have a Olympics held in India. Will the common man benefit from Olympics...no they wont...!! look at the broader perspective of things...india gets known on a world stage...indirectly FDI would come in. Reading half the comments on this story, it seems like we shud have remained post 92...a closed economy...then even rediff and the internet wudnt have been in India.
And for those who dont believe the story on F1, read this...
The race wud be held around Oct 09...it wont be a street race (or a pothole race as some people call it)...a stadium with a race track will be built by then, and the race would be in Delhi.

Sanju thats Mallaya is Mallya and u r still a sanju, what if it happens in Delhi or JHOOMRI TALIAYA, Its happening in India right ? Talk of Global Vision and then u meet people u cant look beyond their window, MYOPIC LOW DWELLERS !!
Kalmadi is the MP from Pune and as long as his faction controlled the Municipal Corporation, Pune could have easily hosted the Himalayan Car Rally!!!!
If Kalmadi is going to make the track for the F-1, GOD help Bernie Ecclestone and the F-1 drivers, because the man (Kalmadi) really knows how to make majorly pot-holed roads.

This stupid man is going to race his Maruti cars as F1 cards on the track. How stupid can this man get????
Is it a joke? or it isnt? Our politicians will take their family for a long drive on this F-1 track if at all it happens.....and will need repair every ever post mansoon for sure....
I do not understand why this is difficult for some to blieve this.
I had been Monaco(a small rich country near south of france) recentely! There they hold a grand prix every year, and this country is so small, that it is just one city. Second smallest country after Vatican. So where is the space for F1 track?
The track is the very public road used by normal public for commutation in normal days! They just put up temporary stadiums on scaffolds for the event!

winderr so what u want to compare ur Karachi/ Islamabad with it, how optimist r u ? BHIKARI FOOT yaa se, teri is site ki aane ki level nahi!!!
heartening news ,but what i worry is that the useess IOA is in charge. they have already desrtoyed indian sports .Just hiope we have a GP that makes long term profits
This is in one way a good news as the F1 will make the government invest in Infrastructure of the country but on the other hand a lot of money will be spend which could have been better utilised but then most of our states dont use the fund allocated to them........hence in a sense it is good atleast some infrastructure will be made......some jobs will be created and the Fans will have a Blast !!!
talks of buliding and hosting an F1 track has been doing the rounds for almost 5 years now... really hope that this news report is true.. but you also need to have a very strong supporting circuit to keep up with the costs of maintaining an F1 track..
