keep it up Sani

Well, let us acknowledge that Sania has made it despite the system and not because of it. She is the flag bearer for womens tennis in India and we must appreciate that and egg her on.
Its both a pity and a shame that we disrespect our sportspeople when form deserts them.

She won over Sybille Balmer too today to enter the finals of Bank of West Classic. This is the first time she entered the finals of a Grade II tournament.

....stressing that her potential is there and the results will come once her game improves.

The improved results this week are a sign of that.

All those illiterates who have been bad mouthing her because of their appaling ignorance of tennis as well a cheap character will have be shown up for the bufoons they really are in the near future.the clock is ticking away for them as sania ,matures!

Though i am not watching her matches but following her matches for last 2 years silently. I always truste dher talent and never doubt or think her to be fluke or lucky occasionaly. her dip in career is only because of injuries and missing of a fitness trainer or physio. I just hope she dont get injured once again....rest will be history in writing
Best of luk

Sania's ranking
by Suresh Narayan on Jul 28, 2007 05:42 PM  | Hide replies

To get into top-10 is a huge task for her. She needs to show this kind of performances in the next two championships and also at US Open. Then, she can hope for entering into the elite club.
Suffice to say, she needs to show more consistency....which is lacking in almost every sports personalities (including team game, like cricket, hockey..take any sport for that matter) in the country. The main reason for that is, we tend to get carried away..because of hype created around, knowingly or unknowingly.

talking about other factors is totally useless and shallow.

If not the best, Sania possesses one of the best forehands in the game now
by Suresh Narayan on Jul 28, 2007 05:33 PM  | Hide replies

in response to jam hangzo's concern to know Sania's ranking after this tournament:

For reaching semi final at Stanford, she stands to get 125 ranking points. This semifinal appearance definitely brings her to 33rd position in the ranking list. If she reaches final beating Sybille Bammer, she will get 190 points, which will take her total points to 823 and that will guarantee a 30th ranking in WTA list. In case, she wins this tournament, she will fetch 275 ranking points, which will take her to 28th position in the WTA list.

Thanks for your reply.I was under the impression that if any lower rank player win against a higher rank player they get some bonus points.Whatever her rank is great and wish her the best.

The bonus points system has been scrapped last year. Suresh's calculations assume that the other players won't score any points and will have the same number of points when the rankings are calculated on monday. If any body climbs up in rankings, she will not reach Top 30. Fransesca Shiavone is sure to climb up into Top 30, since she reached the SF of other tournament.

Your impression is correct. If any lower ranked player wins against higher ranked player, they get Quality Points (Bonus points). Since both the women, Sania had defeated (Tatiana Golovin at 19th and Patty at 15th in the ranking list), she is supposed to get around 40 bonus points. Still that will not carry her inside 20.
See, bonus points are awarded according to rankings. For eg: If Sania beats Justin Henin, she is supposed to garner around 100 bons points in Tier Tournaments, whilst the stage is a Grand Slam, she will earn 200 bonus points..If she beats 2nd ranked player, say Maria..she will get 75 bonus points..will go on like that.

Dear Mr. Suresh,
I really appreciate the kind of indepth knowledge u have about tennis. Since tennis is one of my favorite sports, and I am following tennis pretty closely for the last 22 years, even I did not knew or had clear picture of how the ranking points were calculated, like bonus points, etc. I am very pleased with kind of information u have given.
Thanks a lot.

Big news in a tier III tournament. Not like she won a GSlam

Wait - more to come. The crashout. 16 yr olds won GSlams. Sania is in some small unknown tournament - we should expect better. Nowhere else would this be news.

ignoramus, how much of the 16 yr old winners went on to attain all time great status?

Tracy austin-burn out
martina hingis -burn out
sharapova-strugging to add to her slams
serena-one golden period 2002-2003 struggling for consistency ever since

people who have simpler games can rise faster.

federer had to master a really complex game. Aas a result he won his first only at 21!

Understand sports first you nincompoops

I fully agree. Someone also complained Rediff was too slow in publishing this story. Big deal. But Sania always loses the next big match anyways. Besides like this reader pointed out this is only a 3rd tier tournament and not a major one let alone a grand slam. All the players participating are 3rd or 5th rated players like Sania. So what if Sania wins. By golly its time she won some. She always loses in the 1st or 2nd round. For the hype she gets she needs to win a grand slam. Of course Sania has done India proud, I agree but the accolades given her are more than she deserves for her mediocre performances so far. Sania has not lived up to her potential because of her poor fitness level, losing always in the early rounds even to players who are well below her rank.

its not sania's fault.....its the ppls who have started expecting too much from her....they shd give her time to improve....

if she wins every one starts praising her (thats fine)...but if she looses in 1st or 2nd round ppls started abusing her in all manners...
