Winning a Medal
by Mandar on Aug 30, 2004 03:04 PM

Yes Anju did good job. But after all JO JITA WAHI SIKANDAR.
Lets hope better performance in coming days. I feel that rather than commenting on Mr. Sarma's opinion. People should post their own statement.
Regards
Mamdar

Anju's performance
by vijayakumar on Aug 30, 2004 02:36 PM

Yes, it is a creditable performance. But, I feel sorry for her not winning a medal. It is not her fault. She has come to this level, with all her hardwork and determination. I watched the long time jump final right from the start. The sign of nervousness was apparent in Anju's face. She was under tremendous pressure of winning a medal. This is the sorry story of our country, putting pressure on individuals. This happens in every sport, sachin tendulkar, leander paes, dhanraj pillay to name a few. I pray to god to give all the mental and physical strength to Anju to win a gold medal for India in the Beijing Olympics.

Medal was never in sight for Anju because she never made it 7 but breaking her own record proves that she tried her best that matters most

T V S Sarma seems to be an idiot..I dont think he knows what even 3 cm means in long jump...I don't think he has played any sorta competetive sport in his life. Maybe he shd look at waht he's done in life for the country.. Lets appreciate Anju for coming up with a good jump inspite of all the pressure..we shd encourage her and egg her on so that she can be a top 3 jumper...she truly is World class ...way to go Anju...keep it up and ppl like Sarma...just shut up...if u cant contribute...

If you can't be civil enough in your comments, keep them to yourself. I know more demeaning words if you prefer gutter fights
Good luck and learn some manners

I call it really creditable
by Akshay on Aug 30, 2004 09:45 AM

I will call it creditable. she has given her best there. but at the same time we should always think how these sport persons can get better infrasctrucure to excel in the field.

Is that creditable?
by N.Parthasarathy on Aug 30, 2004 09:12 AM

A few days earlier, P.T.Usha had said that Anju would make it with a bit of "luck". What she did not say at that time was that the luck had to be at least 22 cms - and that's an enormous margin notwithstanding the fact that she finished sixth out of 12. The fact was that and is that Anju was definitely not a medal prospect considering the field unless all the others fouled on all their attempts or we had a boycott by Russia as it happened in 1984 Los Angeles (which incidentally led to P.T.Usha finishing fourth in the hurdles).

Waste of taxpayer resources
by PRABHAT KUMAR on Aug 30, 2004 03:14 AM

Hi,
many times this hackles have been heard that Govt doesn't back our players.
While I will not disagree, I believe that the folks like Anju have access to teh best available in country.
I agree with TVS that we sincerely are wasting money on such played who go there and don't even care to perform.
I am not against people participating in Olympics, but there has to be basis for selection.
I strongly believe that Winning in identifies world class games (e.g. Asiad, Champions trophy, etc) should become the basis for go/no-go for olympics and same formula shuld be applied for lower-level games as well.

have a heart....she did make us proud
by balaji on Aug 30, 2004 02:20 AM

It was surprising to read a viewers comment about anju's performance. people can sit back and talk about tax payers money and all. first we need to get the records straight. A athelete gives his life and carrer to the sporting world and that too in sports like this Mr reader I beg to differ.....you money goes no where to them. Its not cricket. they dont even get money to maintain themselves leave alone for training.
BREAKING A NATIONAL RECORD IS IN ITSELF A ACHEIVEMNT. GETTING SELECTED TO OLYMPIC FINAL IS SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL.

''ANJU U HAVE DEFENETLY DONE US ALL PROUD BY YOUR EFFORT..GOOD LUCK FOR THE DAYS TO COME''''

Let us encourage for a better performance!!!!!!!
by prakash on Aug 30, 2004 12:40 AM

Sir,

It is very easy to blame people or to critisize others. But, I would say, we need to encourage our athlethes who with less sponsership and facilities have done their best. Look at our Indian cricket team performance?. And olympic is not like cricket with only 16 countries participating. Just imagine what will happen if all the coutries participate in cricket like olympic. Needless to say on that.

But our media and govt. encourages mostly cricket.

I see sarma statements.......but anju and other atheletes were far better than people who took drugs and made our country shame!!!

So lets encourage our atheletes.....lets ask our govt to give facilities like other countries....let the govt commercialize the sports and games so that there is immense competition.....lets ask the private companies to sponser atleast one game or an athelete...let the govt pick out young boys and girls when they are even 5 to 8 yrs old and make them concentrate and dedicate in one sports and have a mission for olympics like China, Russia, Romania etc where we saw people of 15 and 16 yrs old were participating. Is the govt listnening?
