Did he said they are anti national who are ready to die for the country in spite of being poor!
His concern was how we can imply nationality in our duty to our country.

The feeling we have for Mother India is already very strong, but it does not reflect in our actual actions and our behaviour, only in our sentiment.

And the strength of feeling only shows when it comes to our reaction to the actions of others, not our own.

I think nationalism as defined in English is quite accurate for us Indians. We are concerned mainly about 'our superiority over others' and our emphasis is 'on the promotion of our culture and interests as opposed to those of others'.

Real feeling for nation in terms of contribution and sacrifice seems absent. Only noise and anger are on display.

The whole India could identify suffocated communists, (most of them were in Media) clearly.
This article itself says the same. Thanks rediff to provide them platform to express their Anti (sorry for using Anti) National views.
Shame on your birth in India. You are betraying your Parents and those who made you powerfull enough to study to educate and to write and that is you Country.
Shame on such kind of Articles.

A literate can be taught ;
A illiterate can be taught ;
But it is really difficult to teach a semi literate.

And the middle classes in India,
by piri on Feb 23, 2016 11:58 PM

together make up just about 20 % of the population (defined by the NCAER as families that own at least one motorized transport vehicle each).

And all those who respond in laboured over enthusiasm to words such as *nationalism*, *patriotism*, *national pride*...........and compete with one another to sound more and more intolerant of ideas they find different are the same ones who fall silent and turn so very tolerant when it comes to dealing with thieving political and business leaders and go on to elect and re-elect those politicians to power again and again!

As for the majority among the population that is poor or grindingly poor, terms such as *nationalism* or *patriotism* have little real meaning. They are much too pre-occupied all their lives in their struggle for day to day survival to spend any time for such niceties.

The great majority of those in the middle classes though are truly defined by Khushwant Singhs perspective laden statement :

Indian commoners are among the stupxidest in the world; they re-elect thieves !

Some different picture !
by systems technologies on Feb 23, 2016 10:58 PM  | Hide replies

Shri Patel has travelled many countries in last 30 years and must be having a fair view of the nation. But it seems that the evaluation is based on what other languages / cultures express and not specifically Indian.
I am from business communitiy and I find people regularly file their correct returns and are proud of it, or atleast satisfied about it. Similarly, TDS is not that salary phenomenon, whenever I am paid more than 20 K, TDS is cut. And further, getting refund is also not really difficult. If the return is filed at its due date, we get refunds very promptly.
Still Aakar Patel is an honourable man, and he must be right.

Aakar Patel is not a balanced writer and his views are jaundiced. I am also not a supporter of Mr Modi but I am not miser in showering praise of he takes good measure. Unfortunately Mr Modi is not giving me more such opportunities.

Need not rely on the words of Aakar Patel. You can look up the site of the Income Tax department to understand the truth that those who file IT returns add up to just 3 % of the population !
