In general, Indian commoners - especially the middle class -

cannot understand what basic human development means and why it is the most important part of a country's development.

Increasingly, they have come to think and believe earnestly that true development must manifest itself in the presence of hundreds and thousands of polluting manufacturing units that employ slave labour (and which yield rip off profits to its owners - who will then invest part of those profits in starting more and more slave labour units and further pollute the environment).

On any scale that compares factors such as air, water and soil pollution, minimum wages actually paid, observance and enforcement of the norms mandated in the factories act and taxes actually collected against taxes payable, Kerala stands head and shoulders above every other state in India.

Narendra Modi has spent a good part of the last decade shouting from every rooftop available in trying to create an impression among commoners that the state of Gujarat - under his enlightened rule - has emerged as a truly developed state and leads all other states in India in terms of all round development.

A detail by detail comparison between Gujarat and Kerala using the data of numerous surveys by the NSSO, the Census, the UN HDI and those by the various union ministries (including the ministry of environment and forests) will knock the bottom out of Modi's ever taller and taller claims about Gujarat.

But no, data, surveys, their methodologies, etc. are not the commoners'

Best way for MDM and ICDS food schemes
by Jagdish Dubey on Sep 25, 2014 07:58 AM  | Hide replies

is to rope in or start Amul / Mother dairy type of large scale orgs for supply of hot, tasty, and hygienically prepared meals under various schemes. They may set up mot modern kitchens all over the country at least one in each 6612 development block from where packaged ready to serve meals may be supplied in insulated vans equipped with hot cases and deep freezers to all schools and anganwadies. No cooking at schools or aanganwadies, no utensils and cleaning involved. Stagger lunch hour to facilitate supplies. Lunch need not necessarily mean the messy dalsbji roti chawal locally cooked and badly served under most inhygeic conditions. Our schools and aanganwadis are ill equipped and unsuitable as kitchens cum dining hall. Whats wrong with cashew pistachio biscuits for just Rs.10?

Dubeji, it is wrong to believe that daily 'meal' of cashew pistachio biscuits is good for health of growing kids. continuous eating of such bakery products eventually do harm to the digestive system of children, as these products contain preservatives. Instead, hygienically cooked and served normal balanced diet is good for children.

That was just a point to illustrate that nutritious packaged items need not always be very costly. My suggestion is to have a most modern kitchen in every black hqs where nutritious hot meals may be cooked most hygienically every day, then packaged in one use trays and supplied to schools and anganwadies in food vans equipped with hot cases and deep freezers.

I remember how my school served snacks of sprouts, roasted grains or fruits etc and not roti / rice meal at lunch. There can be so much variety once we give the contract to Amul or like org.

Kerala has long been

the exception among all Indian states in terms of the commoners' good sense of hygiene.

This fact is documented in too many surveys for anyone to try and deny it, however inventive they get !

Kitchens are okay but toilets still need improvement
by Kumar on Sep 24, 2014 05:46 PM  | Hide replies

Kitchens are good in many areas. Some states need to improve.

Toilets need to improve in most areas.

But kitchens are more important as children are eating mid-day meals

Modi has addressed the issue with promptness. The centuries of legacy with poor sanitation will be a thing of the past within 3-5 years.

Modi ruled Gujarat for 12 long years.

And the state of sanitation today remains as pathetic in Gujarat as it was before Modi (supported by data from the World Sanitation Congress as well as the surveys by the Total Sanitation Campaign of the Union ministry of rural development)!

Big talk can hide facts only from stuxpid commoners!

We cannot put responsibilities on Modi ji. He has various other responsibilites on his shoulder. This needs change from the indiviual standpoint. So if we put in efforts, Gujrat or Arunachal, J&K or Tamil Nadu, we shall overcome.:)
