A WELCOME DEVELOPMENT
by KRISHNAMURTHY V on Sep 21, 2014 07:26 AM

This is a welcome development. At this very critical juncture, it will be better if we have an Indian-born American Ambassador in New Delhi, so that the relationship between the biggest democracies in the world improves to the benefit of both and the world at large. When economic downturn and terrorism is threatening the world and India is facing a lot of problems on its borders and beyond, a better relationship with the USA will augur well for both.

A thoughtful choice to make a success of greenfield endeavor
by Ramesh on Sep 20, 2014 06:36 AM

US Ambassadors to India in early years of Independence had a larger than life presence and carried considerable clout with Indian cabinet. Then came the cold war years when many of the Ambys were intelli officers with a blinkered mindset. Last few have been career officers with a compartmental approach to diplomacy, which led to serious communication breakdown.

Mr. Verma is likely to be a refreshing change, who is likely to right-size the role of the Embassy. It is a critical role at the present juncture. The goal is a very long term one: to set a firm and proper legal course for a strategic security architecture. It is a very serious administrative responsibility.

It is a political role but not of term limited kind, it is managerial but must create outreach to the larger intellectual body dispersed in India, unlike in US where such kinds are contained in think-tanks. It has intelli-component, which requires not a cold-war mindset, instead needs a civilian-security depth thinking.

Think Mr. Verma, as the report suggests, is likely to be equal to the grave responsibility ahead and work in concert with experts and real people in both sides.

If you meet anybody from India ask him "What Is Your Caste?" If he answers it, then you're doomed. Because he has already injected Cancer into your Country. Caste is like Cancer. It cannot be Cured. It has to be Cut-Off.

His first name happens to be good and a popular one to many in India. Hence he would make a good envoy.

would read as "an indian gets a prestigious nomation for a high post in the US" This is how media glorifies when some docotr or scientis or mathematician wins some award.
