INDIAN MENTALITY
by Anand sodo on Jun 14, 2014 02:49 PM

The Main Root of all the Problems in India is that - we always want and wish 'others' should 'Adjust'.... while we ourselves can live in luxury!.
We just DO NOT want to work - we believe in Rationing -The Mother of all Corruption!
Learn to live life - KINGSIZE! - Work for it - Don't BEG, Don't Ration things, Don't Adjust for every small thing in life.
The ONLY solution is PRODUCE more Electricity - Yes Solar Panels ARE a good way to do so ...Provided The Government comes up with a humanly clear and positive policy and the People of India STOP thinking about "I" "ME" and "MYSELF" .... and Install as many Solar Panels as Possible within their premises at their own Cost and the Government allows them to SELL their Production directly into the GRID and ofcourse keep buying their actual needs from the power Boards....

Good Proposition
by Cheran on Jun 14, 2014 01:46 PM  | Hide replies

Good insight from Prof Jhunjunwala, the proposition in general in highly desirable. While it deserves due admiration, I wish to stress on few points to professor:
1. Power factor: To compare our (India's) power factor with other developing and developed countries. It is very possible to improve present factor gradually and achieve close to unity (I do not say unity). This will help optimise the power generated.
2. Scrap outdated designs: One who looks in detail will understand many of the existing designs are outdated and needs to look closely. It could be either civil, mechanical, electrical, protection etc etc. Optimise configuration of tranmission circuits, conductor material, insulation and related components.
3. Implement routine insepction, including corona, thermal scanning detect loss pockets/faulty compoents and replace
4. Consider better substitutions those offer better performance.
5. R & D in most of the arena are below satisfactory, need to improve lot. Government to focus on this area.
6.IEA to be revisited to obsolete old age and outdated statutues. There are many dormant and stumble laying aspects are there.
7.Materials and work methods adopted in distribution system need to be revisited. many are due for replacement or change.
8. Unscheduled outage : Though this can not be prevented altogether, this can be reduced to a large extent. This is one of the serious culprits.
9. Emergency Response and restoration system: This area is too weak, needs appropriate

All that you mention needs to be implemented urgently. The authorities, not professors, have the necessary powers.

Solar power is the best solution
by kalyanrao Mahadeo Garadkar on Jun 14, 2014 11:43 AM

The solar pannel is the best source for electricity. The most important thing is cost of the pannel.Especially in cities while billing of electricity give 50% concession who hve such pannels . For the pannel give possible discount so as to purchase such kind of pannels. As part of environment everybody is now aware that global warming is due to thermal power stations , vehicular transport. The solar pannes does have any such kind of pollution.Particularly awareness is essential environmetal pollution and its effect on humankind.

Power
by arungopal agarwal on Jun 14, 2014 09:49 AM  | Hide replies

Biggest abuse of power used by congress to licence ACs in residences without power. Similarly another sin is to licence 4 wheelers to individuals without parking and roads.
Correction is now needed, who will do it? In power Govt. must ensure 1 Kwh. load to each family to run cooler, lighting, fans, fridge etc., not AC, those who want to keep AC should have their own generater.
IIndly subsidise grid inter-active solar power on roof tops, units thus given to main line, individuals should credit for the units in their electricity bill in each city.
Put electric generation units near coal mines, sea shores where gas or diesel is available on the spot and transmit electricity to needy States.

Ever heard the name of Mohd Bin Tughlaq?....Solutions are not so simple....Every AC owner should have a separate generator?....kidding?.....stop living in the paradise of fools!

"a few critical devices in every home like fans, lights, TVs and cellphones"!
The Professor thinks TV is a "critical" device, computer and Internet connection are not!

Meet the professor who wants to end power cuts in India

It needs to be our goal not only to end power cuts but to supply power to neighboring counties. This needs efforts on such level as (1) Provide excellent infrastructure to plants (2)Run all plants at 95% efficiency. (3)Plug all losses like transmission and theft. (4) Change public mind set and behavior: watt saved watt generated. (5) Build new plants and use latest technology like BLDC (6) Make Lean plants and their operations.

Indians, as it is today - already have the LEAST per Capita Consumption of Electricity @700 units per annum per head(approx.)compared to more than 21000 units per head per annum of Canada! - Yes go ahead - tell your Brothers and Sisters to Switch off their FANS in the Summers and Study for their Exams in the DARK! while ofcourse INDUSTRY can always Manufacture without POWER!....
INDIANS have to GROW-UP and WORK - if they wish to better their lives - ELSE - keep living in the DARK as PARASITES one each other....
UNDOUBTEDLY your other Suggestions are worth being Followed.
