The argument that the US is not violating local laws by not paying them minimum US wages is morally hollow, as ......

As long as USA is paying more than the minimum wage or more than what the law in India requires them to pay, it is fine. The cost of living is lower in India than it is in USA. So, Indians are Ok to be paid at a lower rate. One should not expect the maid to make the INR equivalent of $8/hour ... that's how much an experienced IT professional makes in India.

Indians themselves have made a mockery of their own judicial system. Americans have only followed.

Interference in Indian judiciary
by sathis g on Jan 14, 2014 03:49 PM  | Hide replies

What is astonishing in the whole episode is the silence of the judiciary in India. Why has the Supreme Court not taken note of this and initiated contempt proceedings against the concerned US embassy officials? It is also important to note that the many of the US states don't have gun control laws; which has led to many incidents of crime in various schools, places of worship etc. in which many innocent people have died. Are we not concerned that US citizens coming to India might carry fire arms into this country? Why do we not impose strip search and cavity search on people coming to India from US. This might well pave the way for gun control laws in the US, if not now, at least in due course, as the US will need India for its own economic progress. Perhaps we can save a few lives in the US.

Absolutely! these diplomats come on a boat, some illegally from across the Pakistan border, so they could be bringing in guns into India. We should mandate that US diplomats only come in by airplane and go though elaborate security check at the airport.

The ruling party is f00l1ng the Indians by showing arrogance to US. They dont have guts to catch thugs like dawood who is enjoying in Pak. Foreign min of the present ruling party has made this country another pakiland. Messed up Nepal-sri lanka-bangladesh-china and NOW USA! As long as this present ruling party stays, more & more scams & corr0pt practices will follow.

American arrogance, mockery of Indian: People / State & Judic
by gs c on Jan 14, 2014 12:30 PM  | Hide replies

This incident has resulted in premature death of the romantic idea of US and India strategic partnership. US needs India to contain China (Which is counter productive for Indian interests). India has bigger foreign trade with China compared to US. India needs to rethink foreign policy and need to re-evaluate ties with old tried and trusted Russia, which stood by India rain and shine. US is un reliable and its hubris is more amusing them frustrating but it might serve India better to create strategic partnership with mature and stable cojntries like Russia and China.

Irrespective of how good or bad Devyanni was or is, the position that she was in should ahve been respected. US had no right to strip search and Indian woman diplomat for such a petty crime- even if its true.

If anything they should have fined her heavily and paid the maid with it. This heavy handedness is not acceptable. If India accepts this sort of behaviour now, it will only get worse.

So lets stand up for India and we can deal with Devyani later.

Which court is that case in? Which Indian law was broken in this instance?
Who was arrested?
Please be specific whilst making your comments instead of "what about this" and "what about that"?

Members of both the Diplomatic and Consular Corps of India and USA should not "carry" any maid or man servants along with them to help in the house hold work.As US personnel do not bri ng with them any domestic help,we will find it difficult as taking domestic help "on the sly like Devyani" would be disallowed and local labor is costly.

Imagine if a indian consulate when leaving in US, (Who have strick laws about labour welfare) exploits its maid, what is the condition of normal indians leaving in india.
According to me Devyani should have been jailed for at least 10 years. She derserved that.

She is a BC and so cannot be jailed. That's how she got the IFS job in the first place.

a few months back, a saudi princess was arrested for the same domestic help/maid abuse issue and the same drama enacted. It is not against Indians like the Indian media and politician clowns say, but a law of America. You break it, you pay for it. Lets see what Indian law is going to do to this woman.
