"A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

"All the religions of the world, while they may differ in other respects, unitedly proclaim that nothing lives in this world but truth." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Look beyond yourself

Look beyond yourself

'There is more to life than simply increasing its speed.'

In very many ways, Gandhi could have led a comfortable life had he chosen to. The young Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had a lot going for him -- he had, after all, a foreign degree, held a steady job and had seen the world so to say before that fateful night when he was thrown out of the first class train compartment at Pietermaritzburg in South Africa in spite of holding a valid ticket.

As he sat shivering in the winter night in the waiting room of the railway station, Gandhi could have well shrugged off and moved on with his life accepting discrimination as part of living and focussing rather on making two ends meet.

Instead, the night proved to be a turning point in his life as he decided to stay on in South Africa and fight the racial discrimination against Indians there. It was here that Gandhi would formulate the unique version of nonviolent resistance that would change the world for ever -- Satyagraha.

At a time when material benefits and personal gratification seem to be the call of the day, Gandhi's words ring truer than ever.

NO ONE IS BORN INTELLIGENT. ONE COMES TO KNOW THE WORLD AS ONE GROWS UP. HE WAS SEND TO FOREIGN LAND BY HIS FATHER. BUT SLOWLY AS HE GREW UP HE REALIZED THROUGH HIS PERSONAL EXPERIENCE ABOUT ATROCITIES AND RACISM OF WHITE PEOPLE IN AND OUTSIDE INDIA. HE IS THE ONE WHO STARTED ANTI-APARTHIED MOVEMENT IN SOUTH AFRICA AND IN 1897 ALMOST GOT KILLED BY A MOB OF RACIST WHITE MEN AND BOYS.

Understanding His Greatness
by Vineet Nagar on Oct 02, 2013 07:35 PM  | Hide replies

Without Gandhi's unique ability to unite Indian people from east to west and north to south, there would have be no independence and perhaps no India as we know it today. Without his honest and upright leadership, every region and every community of India would have gone separate ways. He was not perfect as he saw no evil in any one (including Muslims and Muslim league leaders that wanted to create a separate country). So appreciate you ungrateful people - India that you know is India what this frail man and the people inspired by him created for you.

Remembering Mahatma Gandhi - ONLY ??????
by Vijay Chauhan on Oct 02, 2013 07:14 PM  | Hide replies

How unfortunate we are; everyone remembered Gandhi today but not a single news about our late and great Prime minister LAL BAHADUR SHASTRIJI, whose contribution is no way less than Mahatma Gandhi. Let us strengthen our memories and pay tributes to this immortal personality.

Education is a good thing- get it.
Lal Bahdur was a good and honest prime minister for the brief period, but to say that his contribution was any way to close to Gandhi is show lack of understanding. Without Gandhi's unique ability to unite people from east to west and north to south there would have be no independence and perhaps no India as we know we today. So appreciate you ungrateful people.

It seems you got your mind out of you. Gandhi is a alias only. He never freed india. Correct your fact , you need to learn more from indian history. You need to read more. With this little knowledge you should not comment here. Your education is 1st standard. Please at leat pass the matriculation before commenting here. Here talks big boys. Gandhi was just a fancy overlook. India was to freed by 1950 itself without anyone's help. One man tried it hard and that was Netaji Shubhas Chandra Bose, nOne else. You must read the world history to understand the 1940 to 150 Situations. It was hard time for British, they knew that they were no more capable of controlling Indian people. But they used Gandhi to fool all Indian and use him to divide India and how interestingly he accepted that worst decision. So, Please read some, at least some to comment here. Btw, dont take it personal, but you are really burden in india.

Gandhi !!

The only thing greater than Nobel Peace Price.
Whether he was a brilliant politician or tactecian we will never know.
But i have a met a retired British RAF pilot and he said me one thing that Gandhi fooled the British!!
I think his genius was that what ever mistakes he committed in his politics his policies definitely ensured Democracy and a extremly largly peacefull India post independence a feat rarely achieved by no one.
Either the countries were stable or at war, but India was an excpetion, defeated due to internal fights but united now we stand.
Somewhere its to Gandhi.

well said. You have to listen to Gandhi's speeches to understand the purity and clarity of his message. Rarely, will a person come on earth that will inspire millions and millions the way Gandhi did singlehandedly.

Absolutely Vineet. THis is what Einstein said of Gandhiji" Generations to come hardly would beleive that such a man in flesh and blood had ever walked upon earth ". Its sort of miracle that he has acheived; Politically especially in keeping the national movement despite lot of strong leaders around him. Lot to learn from him as a leader

Clement Atlee was the premier of UK during August 1947.
Few years after he relinquished office, he was asked by his friend who was a respectable judge on the role of Gandhi and his movement in attaining independence.
Atlee smiled and replied that role of Gandhi was MI-NI-MAL !

India got independence not due to Gandhi but inspite of Gandhi.

Why India is largely peaceful and democratic post independence is due to the religion of the majority people who dwell in India

Just contrast with the people in the neighbouring two countries who share the same culture, history and heritage but due to some unfortunate historical reasons had to relinquish their faith to an alien ideology.

Thats too much of credit to Hinduism, i think u forgot the Bihari Raj Thakare of Mumbai, inspite of his shared heritage he is known for his hatred. The only logic can be that he bring a Kayast he hates Yadavs and in Mumbai its mostly Yadavs who get his burnt, do u have anyhing more to add, or for that matter, Vegeterian Societies ?

It is now a fashion to criticise Mahatma Gandhi and what he did. Maybe because he got us freedom too easily. But ask those who were teenagers there during the 1930s and 1940s. They all praise him and all other leaders of that time. I am sure if you had told Sardar Patel or Lal Bahadur that they were greater leaders than the Mahatma, they would have sent you to a doctor to get your head examined. It was because of Gandhi and all the leaders then that India got its freedom. If it was left to people like Vishvaksenah E India would still be under some foreign rule.

Great Leader
by lax yopr on Oct 02, 2013 05:30 PM  | Hide replies

He was a world leader, not just India's.

Very few leaders give universal messsages like Gandhi did of 'non-violence'.

Other leaders whether American, British, Chinese, French etc, were leaders just inside their own countries. They have no universal appeal, but Gandhi's message of 'non-violence' has universal appeal & will be applicable at all times.
