I am confused - these comments made by various Indians sound like the comments one usually hears from Taliban Mullahs. Has India been taken over by Talibans? Of all the people you quote in the feature, I would support the attorney representing the accused. It is his job to say anything to defend his clients. It is his constitutional obligation. But other guys, they are simply morons.
this paradigm shift in societal values in India was not caused by godment at all, but by a phoney culture that has been standardized in English medium schools. There social disparity in society is glaring, not just in economic terms but in values also. Bollywood is oout of control with unabashed glorification of skin and violence, and themes that is straight out of nowhere. Wrong to bash only godment- we hv seen precious little from the secular press.
The problem is NOT a handful of nutjobs. The problem is, if probed, the view of the MAJORITY! Even educated people talk stuff like, if she dresses like this, she is ASKING for it! Really! Why was she there so late at night. With a man she was not married to. So she should be punished by getting raped! THIS is the biggest difference between India and USA. THIS needs to change. Opening Mcdonalds and Malls does not qualify as change.
The culture and mindset is retarded. Sadly in a country that professes to "worship" women!

I would say the concept of "worshipping" women should change. Indians have the habit of stereotyping women as either "mother goddesses" or "glamor queens" and nothing in between. With the result either the women is sickeningly protected or banished from society. She just does not have a chance to live realistically in life.
The male dominated attitudes of the society should give way to a more objective and realistic attitude towards women so that women folk can emerge stronger ane lead a competitive life in society on their own terms!
It is a shame for the whole country that a young girl has to lay her life fighting her tormentor because of lack of law and order in the capital city. No doubt, all of our hearts go out to her family in this difficult time. Media is quick to distort the comments snd sensationalize the comments for its own sake. At least I personally listened to what Bapuji said and it leaves me in no doubt that either the reporting journalist did a clumsy job or editors are incompetent in supervision and cross checking for the correctness of the comments.

Actually they are indications of the deep rooted feeling most Indian men have towards women. They either treat her as "mother goddesses" worthy of worship or "dance doll" worthy of entertainment and trash - but nothing in between. Majority of Indian men want their women to sub servient and not Independent.
Unless the attitude of being able to digest a woman operating independently is in vogue our women will continue to be suppressed and victimised.
Its a huge challenge facing Indian women that no one wants to address!
