from a woman is un-justified and cannot bring out facts. Rediff should have arranged such Ques/Answer session with a Male, who can better explain the Male psychology.
I cant agree with K.Krishnan & her vague analysis of male power vis a vis rape. We seem to have the wrong people in the right places. No one is talking of lack of adequate security. Instead of doing wrong analysis on the logic behind rapes, it would be more constructive to point out that security apparatus for the common man & woman is lacking. While politicians are surrounded by several special forces, the lay man on street is at the mercy of hoodlums.
Perhaps, women's rights activists need to get their thinking straight.
I feel that discussion with female chauvinists will never help you come to a solution. The solution lies in interviewing the rapists and find out what prompted them to Rape? If you compare Delhi and Mumbai, where there is much more immigrant single living population, the answer is obvious, Mumbaiites have an outlet, whereas Delhiwalas do not have that option...the Redlight area. women will never agree that having an outlet is not a solution but the problem is that is the only solution!
Kavita Krishnan is totally wrong in saying "rape is about male power which society confers". If that was so, then all males would have been rapists and there would have been nothing as "women rapists" which is not true. It is a fact that Porn is not the reason for rapes, else there would have been more rapes in Western world where porn is freely available. The fact is that these incidents are result of two main things - one is fall in human values & the other is culture turbulence. where are human values these days? does any school or family teach values to their children? people have become so used to corruption that our minds have got corrupted! Then there is a culture turbulence that we are witnessing - people who have lived in an oppressed culture suddenly being exposed to a new culture(people who have grown in a culture where women were forcefully kept within fourwalls, drawing big ghunghats even in front of their husbands, gender discrimination being prevalent, hundreds of superstitions, dowry etc. and such people moving within a different culture that is very liberal & free. such people are not psychologically prepared for the free world & their thoughts & actions get easily corrupted). the mahila morcha women (like ms kavita) who come on tv and keep giving anti-men statements are equally responsible as what is needed is not "men bashing" but explaining why todays world needs "equal opportunities & repsect fo

Your views are strong but make a lot of sense. I think your theory of "culture turbulence" is quite potent. I personally feel a more detailed analysis needs to be done on the basis of religion to find out which religious groups are indulging in rape. This would also be an eye opener. My immediate hunch would be that the lowest incidence of rape would be among Christians as their faith is more tolerant & open with a huge amount of respect towards women. Muslims & Hindus have traditionally opposed the emancipation of women hence greater inequality exists among genders in these two religious groups.
The recent case of 5 year old being raped cannot be explained by this logic. What kind of supremacy was being proven by raping a 5 year old?
Other biggest logic going rounds is the female initially encouraging and then backing out. That logic also cannot explain this particular incident. Only logic that explains this incident is beastly pleasure of human beings and there may be role of alcohol also involved in it.
