Low Probability High Impact events - Black Swans
by Sachin Purohit on Oct 01, 2012 10:20 AM  | Hide replies

"We stayed there for thirty years and nothing happened to us" is akin to saying that the sacrificial goat staying with a muslim guy for close to one year believed that he will keep getting good food for ever based on history of getting regular food from its master for close to one year. Needless to say, the goat was shattered when Bakri Idd happened. When catastrophe comes, it does not come announced.

Instead, we should just give up nuclear energy, because

if the river dries, and the chain breaks...

There is a ONE POINT safety check
by Janarddan on Oct 01, 2012 09:35 AM  | Hide replies

If the reactor is 100% safe WHY does the supplier need limit to liability under accident ? If the supplier needs limit to liability, it vouches for only one thing - THE SUPPLIERS THEMSELVES BELIEVE
that there could be accidents.

A liability clause is a contractual clause in any commercial transaction. If you understand accounting basically that means the company selling this reactor has to account for trillions of dollars of liability in its balance sheet. Which means they have to raise so much of assets to match that liability and therefore the company itself will become unviable. After all these are not charity organizations and nuclear research demands so much investment. Its shocking that even so called educated people keep blindly opposing nuclear power. It is good to ask questions but once the govt. has given the answers better shut up and listen.

You cannot construde that limiting liability means that it doesnot have safety, there are warings for what we buy today.it is like like disclaimer, Nuclear enery is future futire for india, we need to have without compromising on safety, we are having nuclear plant since 1976, our country is managing properly, and all the employees who are very closely working are safe, we should not budge to forign missionaries working as agents to other country to promote self.

Country of Protestors
by sam on Oct 01, 2012 09:27 AM

India has become a country of protestors! Every man , woman and dog has some reason to protest. Either nuclear power or some religious blasphemy or corruption .. etcetc..And the Supreme Court has become the Supreme cheer leader for these guys. This Kudankulam is a classic...people first saying Tsunami...then asking where will you dispose of waste?? Obviously they are not going to put it in a plastic bag and let the muunicipality collect it. There are so many other nuclear plants running and Kalpakkam is so close to Chennai...why dont we ask them how they dispose?? And if the answer is give will the protestors shut up and go back?? Alas that wont happen because they will find some other excuse. In a country which has a lot of lazy and incompetent folks protest is the only full time activity for these guys.

We understand all these stories. I am also from the Kudankulam area. Our only question is "What is your plan of disposing of the used fuel? Where are you going to dump it? Is it at the same place at Kudankulam or somewhere else? Why not the govt say firmly about their plan? Accidents might happen and what is the disaster management system in place?"

mmoron ram.....more ppl get killed in 1 month in vehicle accidents than have been killed in 60 years of nuke plant history .

so why not ban vehicles ?

most of the fuel is reprocessed and used as fuel .

the rest is mixed in concrete to prevent leaching and placed in deep underground mines/silos.....just like natural radioactive ores.

And fact is there is more radiation from coal plant due to the fact that one of the minerals in coal ore is uranium.....44% of power is from coal plants....so u want to ban that too ?

so where will u get cheap power ? or u can live with kerosene lamps ?

if cities need more power and these nuclear plants are 100% safe then why are these plants not built near cities. dont say this and that plant is already there. if any plants are already there, they would have built before people were not aware of the problems. YOU BUILD THE PLANTS AWAY FROM CITIES AND SUCK ITS POWER and IF ANY DISASTER POOR PEOPLE CAN DIE... are you eating good or anything else ?

Also what a lie these people are saying no death due to radiation at kalpakkam. read the article at wikipedia on kalpakkam plant and see the officially confirmed deaths due to radiation...

You should read the reports and then get convinced. If this was China then so many of these protestros would have been jsut buried there itself...no wonder China is so far ahead and we are just a nation of protestors.

protest and agitations against nuclear power
by raman govindan on Sep 30, 2012 08:43 PM

India is a a poor country! we cannot have trhe same yardstick for living as in the western developed countries. a child less than 2 years or less, was seized from the Indian origin parents in a scandinavian countrybecause it did not have separate bedroom of it's own. in India a whole family consisting grand parents, prents and children live in one or two bedroom houses with no or single toilet. let us be practical while we protest against nuclear energy establishments, manufacturing factories and dams, roads etc.

Local fisherman are afraid of losing their livelihood. Large quantity of sea water is required for cooling the reactor. To run a 1000 MW nuclear reactor, 476500 gallons of water per minute (130000 m3 water per hour).is required. Due to large intake of sea water the small fish and the big fish got killed on the net (mesh) provided in the inlet side of the suction pipe of the pumps. So over a period of time fish yield will come down in the surrounding areas of the plant. .This problem is there all over the world. This is not an immediate problem. This problem has to be studied over a period of time. Govt. should agree to provide alternate employment. or compensation to the fisherman..in case of any problem.3)      Most important unsolved problem is the storage of highly radioactive spent fuel. Like Fukushima it will be stored under ground..At Fukushima, the highly radioactive spent fuel got contaminated with sea water and created more problem than the reactors. This is a major safety hazard all over the world. At Kalpakkam the spent fuel is being recycled and reused again jn the reactor Where as it is going to store in the plant like

absolutely correct, asking the right questions to address the concern doesn't mean someone is against Npower and development - that's what the supporters of the Nplant project.

30 years near a nuclear reactor....
by Abel Verghese on Sep 29, 2012 02:27 PM

While considering the viewer from the Kalpakam resident review the article: http://www.kiddofspeed.com/chernobyl-revisited/

I still consider the spent fuel disposal process is deeply suspect.
