Pre-requisties to declare a country democratic
by Udayasimha alasinger on May 10, 2012 06:16 PM  | Hide replies

For a country to be decalred democratic requires some pre-requisites. People should be mature enough to judge what is right and what is wrong. Just because some system is working well in a place(USA) does not mean that it will be successfull everywhere. During the British rule, there were pockets of kindoms which were matured enough, primarily because of good administration by the local rulers and the British. When we gained independence, it was like mixing clean water with dirty water making all the water dirty. And unfortunately in India, the dirty water was more than the clean water. And on top of it we have to find a leader in the murky water, which is quite difficult. And now after 60 years of demonocracy, we have realised that the so called leaders that are sitting are a set of hooligans...

why this kolaveri over uk?
by vandiyathevan on May 10, 2012 06:10 PM

Mr. Patel, UK presently is predominantly English with majority religion as christianity. Indian as opposed has more than 28 states, 28 plus major languages, 7 major religions - compare this diversity with them! English arent even able to break bread with Scots and Irish, leave alone being cohesive in European union! Merely articulating in english or using sophisticated behaviour isnt the sign of progress. Try getting some country bumpkins elected to house of commons and see how it fares! Even in the present lot there are some great speakers and thinkers. Please go through the various debates we had in parliament during 2g scam / lok pal bill! Yes there is a discipline problem which needs to be tackled, but no need to go gaga over a tiny nation's method of running the parliament. Please let us form our own codes and standards and not be overawed by the failed west!

Let people of India give democracy a long leave & seek outside consultatacny either from China or Oman or similar progressive state where Government is being run by a few dedicated , unrepresentative though, persons of very high sense of patriotism. Rest assured, democracy of India is all bakwas, self fulfilling prophecy.

Parliament's role in making India a great nation is over

"I mean their ability to properly educate and productively employ all their citizens"

the prime culprit is Nehru, our first PM. he slept over it and lectured over colonialism to the world when it was dying. the others took a cue, and talking incessantly about colonialism. sri. Kamaraj, the man who talked less, but acted and introduced free schooling with free lunch was thrown to wolves!

"The responsibility now rests with us, individuals, to make India a nation we can open to the world without shame"

very much correct! the ordinaryy individuals work hard, sacrifice, save, raise their children. educate them and build the nation!

all political parties selecting candidates to contest for loksabha and state assemblies should see the merit in the candidate rather caste religion , money and mussle power. then only people with high calibre and ises and speak for good of the country.
considarble number of our law makers are having doubtble creditentials and not well qualified so that they can understand the nitty , gitty of our countries problems.
hence we canot compare our lawmakers with law makers of other countries

AMIT SEN
indian democracy
by AMIT SEN on May 10, 2012 05:07 PM

It was Jwaharlal Nehru who made India a democratic ,secular, welfare state.at the time of independence,India was a fragmented subcontinent with jagirdars, maharajas, nawabs.nehru gave democracy.
at thata time
had there been leaders like bal thakray, lalu, jayalalita, mayawati, indira gandhi, mamata, they would have been fighting for there own cause, and subsequently we would have had by now a fragmented country or subcontinent.
Nehru was a seasoned and groomed politician
