99.99% marks, spelling bees, GK bees, joint entrances, competitive exams etc. Innovation, spirit of adventure, discipline are some of the qualities that are essential for individuals and communities to grow. We admire Edisons, Columbus and the likes for their achievements not for the %age of marks they scored. Their achievements are the kind that bring about lasting changes. Given a chance Indians will want to prove that they are superior to these people by CRACKING AN EXAM. Media has always played a dirty role by blowing out of proportion achievement of those who excel in exam rather than those who contribute to growth through innovation. Software Cos are also contributing their mite by making marks look superior to real achievements. All this should stop PRONTO.
Turning points in History: Gun Powder, Steam Engine (England), Steel (Germany), Aviation, space, nukes (USA). NOT MARKS.

I think you are out of mind (or) you have taken up the movie "3 idiots" too seriously in life!
Columbus is not a nobel prize material and Edison is not a great sailor or sportsman or a poet. each has their strengths and job to do And for sure, cracking an exam is no playjob.. esp for dumb minds with average thinking abilities. Do you think you will get the innovations out of blue or without formal education? Or do you think all the worlds development have happened only by school drop outs?
Those rare cases - like gates or steve jobs - are just exceptions. They were just triggers, the whole grinding of innovating and bringing them to shape rests with the flag bearers who are all ground up great acadamecians that have outstanding scholastic records (including being toppers in exams).

What have you become of all people? You would have stood first or second in your kindergarten and felt on top of the world but what are you now? Its just the same. No need to extrapolate what they would be in future. Just praise them for what they achieved now and move on!
Congrats. But stop Idiot Kapil Sibbal who is in a mission to destroy our education System. He wants to dumb the students/generation so that they could not think widely and the elite of the nation can plunder the wealth oft his nation. The grading system will prove disaster in the coming years. Board exams are good and make students brilliant. And if they talk about lessing the stress/pressure from students then I want to say that not all trees grow high neither all bear fruits.
Desi kids are good at being followers they will be good at spelling. Ask them to do some creative act they will be dumb. They are good at spelling as there parents who are first generation americans pay for there schooling and tution. Do a study of second or third gen indians in America and then tell me who is sharp

Prashant & Haatim you'll are both right but things are changing. Today the South is copying North in their habits & ways & thanks to cultural integration the loonies in South are increasing in number. North mainly comprising Bihar, UP, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan are simply pathetic. Odisha is not so bad but they are terribly insular when in their own state. They treat other Indians like outsiders knowing fully well that they are living on dole from the rest of India.

I think southies in general are more studious and prefer progress and achievements to other emotional hangovers like Izzat, khaandan etc. Those are there but I feel they are more widespread in north India than in south india.
English is foreign language ..whats the fun and pride...OK as a foreign language...moreover she is an American....for us our Indian languages are anytime more scientific and vast to master and need much more expertise.
