Cramming!!!
by Tuchcha Aadmi on Jun 01, 2012 04:27 PM  | Hide replies

Most contestants dont know meaning of the words but know the spelling.

This shows what?

Indians are good at by-hearting things without understanding them.

useless words
by Perfect stranger on Jun 01, 2012 04:05 PM  | Hide replies

usless program spelling bee...

whats the use of such words that people can't understand.. Its non-sense to make kids cram these words.. they will never become good authors.
Better to learn to express with simple words like Chetan Bhagat and make good impression on people with your feelings..
useless competition and effort of kids.

This is not for losers like you. Stay out of this you chicken. Keep your advice to your parents. Only they can buy your losing attitude...which they made out of you.

Stop idolizing Indian Americans
by Jatin Das on Jun 01, 2012 03:13 PM  | Hide replies

For once , please remember they are no longer Indians , they are americans - and they themselves proudly say so.

I remember having read the interveiw of Venkataraman Subramanium who won the noble prize for chemistry and when asked about origins - he proudly said - I am not an Indian , I am an American.

That day I felt such sick about this statement and still we try to befriend people who have deserted us for greener pastures and made it big...

@ Jatin Das, they left for greener pasture because there talents and skills were never appreciated or utilized in India. What do you want them to do sit in India and say I am an Indian and waste their gift. There is nothing wrong in him saying that he is an American if he would have not told that he would have been traitor by not honoring the country which helped him.

99.99% marks, spelling bees, GK bees, joint entrances, competitive exams etc. Innovation, spirit of adventure, discipline are some of the qualities that are essential for individuals and communities to grow. We admire Edisons, Columbus and the likes for their achievements not for the %age of marks they scored. Their achievements are the kind that bring about lasting changes. Given a chance Indians will want to prove that they are superior to these people by CRACKING AN EXAM. Media has always played a dirty role by blowing out of proportion achievement of those who excel in exam rather than those who contribute to growth through innovation. Software Cos are also contributing their mite by making marks look superior to real achievements. All this should stop PRONTO just like Pakistan.

SYMPTOMATIC OF INDIAN STYLE OF robotic EDUCATION-
by Kabeer on Jun 01, 2012 02:52 PM  | Hide replies

This is symptomatic of classic Indian style of education and feeling from it a sense of achievement when actually there is nothing much to boast about.

I am not belittling the achievement of this young girl of Indian origin but one should look deeply and introspect as to how come Indians are topping these spellbee contests?

How many of these words one may use in their lives or in any of the professions that they choose including choices of writing literature?

It is a sort of completing the enormous task of taking the dictionary by rote.

Understanding the roots of every word is commendable; but what kind of sense is that one puts a child through these rigours which dont mean anything in their later lives?

When Americans or the British or any English speaking nation other than India and Pakistan are not topping regularly, it doesnt mean they less intelligent than any Indian or a Pakistani. They are giving enough emphasis on spelling and earmarking the other resources such as time and energy to the other facets of life and education.

But Indians are so engrossed about achievement, that they are making their children virtual robots depriving them of normal childhood.

Even the CHinese are so afflicted with this syndrome like Indians.

COme on, Parents! Ostensibly you are some of the most educated and in top positions. Surely, this is not the way to educate your children. You in fact are making them machines in order to make yourselves as the so called proud parents
