When people who are used to a certain way of living, and they see a different practice, the surprise is obvious. When I visited US for the first time, I asked 'Don't you guys wash your backs, after sh!tting?' Americans must have been offended by my tone.
But we do need these wake up calls from foreigners, our our public civility. In my home town, people who call themselves upper castes s#!t on the streets, and discriminate against 'lower' castes who use toilets.
We spit, pee, s#!t and litter in public without thinking that those are our living spaces too.
Oprah made a stupid comment and considering that she is African American and comes from a blue collar background should have known better. But Mr Kidwai is right! If we don't like the way we are in other matters let us change them. Look at the way the so called youth behaved in china recently. They are hooligans and should have been arrested when they returned. But we did not do that.
well said. mumbai is the financial capital of india, but we have largest slum in asia. We have millions of people who sleep and live on the streets. Many people who beg on the street and many who die of hunger. Even our infrastructure is poor. I went to Singapore and Malaysia for holiday, and was surprised how clean and good their infrastructure was. We don't want to face the truth.

I also went to Delhi reached late night and took connought place,embassies,airport route to reach sector 4 dwarka.was very impressed with wide jam free roads nd clean environment. I forgot to look at train stion properly.however while coming back did check out some of the low lying areas nd backdrop of train stations( popular fr slums) then cme back to reality .
Problem of India is overpopulation,lack of opportunities fr vllagers everyone moving to cities nd pathetic govt.
Have you seen them eating Burgers? How do they do it? Do they have a better way to eat? why doesnt she comment on that? how do they eat crabs? just like cannibals and coming to sensitivity, i feel our leaders should feel the pinch and do something about the public toilets
