bechara Rabindranath Thakur (tagore)
by arindam ghose on Sep 09, 2011 01:53 PM  | Hide replies

how can a "British ""Liker"" throw his Knighthood (the "Sir" title bestowed by Queen Victoria) away in protest of Jaliyanwalabag massacre?

all throughout his life, Rabindranath was along with Gandhiji, Netaji and other Indian leaders...at that time no other party was there in India other than Congress...how cud "bechara" Rabindranath support BJP, BSP, Shiv Sena or CPIM?

read as much as u can before commenting on the gr8 Indian personalities...

India got freedom after Rabindranath died...how did he do lobbying to select his song as national anthem?

all the rubbish comments in this forum can be described in a single word...BOGUS!

Tagore bashing seems to be the fad now.Tagore's renounciation of his knighthood, and the essays he wrote on the baneful influence of the British rule are the evidence of his patriotism. He did not hesisitate to criticise Gandhi when he felt the latter was wrong, for instance the burning of foreign cloth or promoting khadi to replace the might of the British industrial power.

Deplorable ignorance
by palanki narayana on Sep 09, 2011 01:32 PM  | Hide replies

My generation of educated Telugu readers became familiar with the great literature of other languages as translations by competent people were available. We first read the works of Bengali authors Bankim,Sharat,Banaphool,Parashuram,Tarashankar Banerji apart from Tagore through translations by Shantiniketan students(Chakrapani,Gopala Reddy,Sivaramakrishna,M.Suri).Hindi authors Premchand,Rahul Sankrityayan,Nirala,Bachchan were available in translations by Pichcheswar Rao,VaraPrasad,Ramamurthi and Alluri Sathyanarayana Raju to name a few.Telugu magazines like Vipula and Chatura are completely devoted to stories from other Indian languages, apart from Sunday supplements which give us stories by stalwarts from India and abroad.
I regret to say all this is oneway traffic. After five decades of staying in North India,I can confidently say that what an average North Indian knows about South India can be written down on one side of a post card.

Valid Points But Not Fully Comprehensive
by brahmarakshas on Sep 09, 2011 12:53 PM

What is said is true enough, but Mr.Raza has mentioned only poets of the Urdu literature, excepting Tagore who of course is well known throughout India, courtesy his Nobel. What about other great poets from other parts of India, say Kamban or Kuvembu or any great writer from any region of India. Let me make it clear, I am not trying to bring in regionalism here, but if an eminent painter like himself is not aware of the other great writers/poets from other parts of the country when refers to forgotten writers, how can the common man be expected to. When you talk of great writers not being remembered in India which has such diversity, your sampling should have writers from various regions. Is Urdu/Bengali literature the only benchmark of great works in India?

And things are not as bad as they seem. At least Tagore, Ghalib are all in the national consciousness to some extent (particularly Tagore), due to various promotions being done by the Government. But many other great artists are languishing in the shadows nationally and are know only in their own states. Mr.Raza's statement itself is an indicator of the current state of things as to why writers are not remembered. You can't fit Indian artists from a small demographic/regional group and then say that they are not remembered, because they don't represent India fully.

Exactly, at least Tagore, Kabir are in the national consciousness to some extent. What about artists like you have mentioned? Mr.Raza does not seem to care about that.
