Forget developing India. In next 15-20 years, there will be only problems and no solutions. Shortage of agricultural land, shortage of water, forest land encroached or denuded, no trees, uncertain rainfall, shortage of food grains and inflation. Shortage of petrol, electricity. No proper highways, uncontrolled accidents on roads, robbery, burglary, chain snatching, corruption, selfish ness, water pollution, air pollution, agricultural land becoming infertile due to over use and multi crops being grown, just to mention a few. Just imagine about this.
I pity and hate your yellow journalism for which you publish a shabby photo of Kolkata though the city has many neat and clean places --though you prefer to publish clean places of othr cities even though they have lots of dirty patches

Actually, every photo in this article is a big testimony to the fact that almost all cities in India are horrendously and incorrigibly dirty !

The Bangladeshis came thru Kol but, settled in the better off cities like Mumbai baring Delhi. Delhi is for the rich only. Labourers & other's stay in Old Delhi & NCR.
First of all it is a week late than many other sites about this info and then it did not do any extra research where as I did some myself.
If you search in google you will get all statistics. Someone asked where is Kanpur, it is 11th.
A better analysis of this whole thing THAN rediff's (not surprising): Decadal growth rate: Blore - 48.9%, Chen - 35.5%, Hyd - 35.1%, Del - 27.3%, Mum - 12.2%, Kol- 6.8%. this shows economic development in South fuelled very fast growth of cities in that region. AP, TN and Kar have the lowest growth rates in India, so the fast growth of their respective capitals shows lot of migration (from the hinterland and other parts of country). Chennai had only 16% groeth rate from 91-01, but it went into high gear from 01-11. If it had maintained the same growth rate as that decade, Blore and Hyd would have overtaken it. This explains why TN had 15% growth rate in 01-11 as opposed to only 10% in 91-01. AP did better job than TN by going opposite way from 15% to 11%. Anyway much much can be written from all these numbers (literacy, gender ratio, gdp per capita etc) --some other time. Rediff journos also need some job right?
