Nuclear Reactor Power Plants
by daniel thorat on Mar 17, 2011 11:36 AM  | Hide replies

Every nuclear reactor is safe till an accident. The next Tsunami cannot be precisely foretold. Hence, the grave risk continues. A thermal, coal-based, or oil/gas operated power plant cannot cause so big a loss of human life and property. Therefore, it is necessary to close down all nuclear reactors and switch back to the thermal and/or hydel power plants. Nuclear reactors are fraught with uncontrollable and unpredictable dangers.

But where is the coal baba? even Chathisgarh has shortage of coal to run powerplanst and it need enromous source of water, which is not available thats why in summer they have to close down plants. Simply with coal u cannot run a powerplant, water is required.

Indian Nuclear plants till now are just ornaments not much power is generated. Only after Atom treaty we are going to get indigenous nuclear plants and technology and fuel.

Be more careful

We need not discourage our nuclear plans. We have to design our plants taking safety factors to bear maximum disatrous natural calmities happened anywhere in the world so far. We must reinforce our existing plants also. No compromise with standards set for such designs.

Nothing can withstand an earthquake and tsunami of the Japan catastrophe proportions. Hence, just give up on nuclear reactors and go back to the earlier, conventional types of power plants.

Please define "Maximum Damage". Also, could anyone guarantee that this "Maximum Damage" will indeed be the damage possible!!!

No Nuclear Plant in BIHAR, UP

These two states are/ will be chief foodgrain producing states (are and in future)... Thrust on Agriculture is more and are not so consumeristic.......

Human Greed and lust for MATERIALSIM has driven the earth and its nature to a perilous extent.............. If we continue to behave in such rampant and recalcitrant way, more catastrophe is in store (in future) which will threaten the HUMAN EXISTANCE....
IN the known period of human existence on earth, this era is the most GREEDY!

We, in today's world give our children the BEST FOOD, TOYS, APPARELS, BEST SCHOOLING etc. etc. etc. etc. , Quality time, Quality holidays, LCD, PLASMA TV etc. etc. etc. and also we are giving the WORST WORST ENVIRONMENT and all ills associated with it.....

Time has come to introspect ourself......

Yes sir. Introspection must result into immediate renunciation of materialism and return to the leisurely pace of the life we had 50 years ago. We can surely do without the nuclear reactor development, because of the risks.

GLOABALISATION
by lalitkhanna on Mar 17, 2011 11:27 AM

it is the time that all countries should openup their immigration gates for stay and work visas for japenese residents till the nuclear radiation in that country comes to normal,in one to two years . this will be the right step towards the globalisation

Indian reactors are safer
by anil atnony on Mar 17, 2011 11:24 AM  | Hide replies

Indian reactors are safer

1. They have double containment

One primary containment with presetressed concrete and other outer contaiment enclosing the reactor core

2. The core is surrounded by moderator at a low temperature which can act as heat sink even under the event of a station black out condition
3. When the power supply to collant pump fails, the pump can still run for few more time and naturally heat can be removed through the Steam generators
4. Our PHWR are having secondary side also, which means that the primary active loop is seperated from steam system, therefore under collant failure, the creator can be crash cooled (very high rate of cooling) by opening the steam discharge value in the secondary steam cylce which is non-radioactive, and even after that fire water can be injected into steam generator side to cool for futher long duration

There is a pool of water at the bottom room of reactor which ensure long term cooling along with ECCS

All these factor will make our reactor very very safe

how do you know they are safe?

if similar disaster happens in india, the Govt/politicians will first think about how to make money and will make sure there are more casualities

Re: Re: Indian reactors are safer

For example when all the powe supply fails, there are DG set driven power supply to cool the reactor. Let us assume that that also fails, then also there is fire water pumps which are independently driven by DG sets.

Even it fails, then also reactor can be cooled by opneing the secondary side of steam generator where the steam is non-active unlike the Japan reactor. Thus there are means to cool the reactor very fast after its sutdown. More over our reactors are situated in regions where earth quake history has show that their maginitude is even below 3 or 4. There for a possibility of EQ of maginitude 3 or 4 itself is very very rare. Even if that EQ happen the reactor will be shut down safety, and if tsunami comes, and other power supply fails even using crash cool down the reactor can be cooled and there is an Emergency cooling system which can inject water into the core for a long time also. Considering all these finer factors our reactors are much much safer...

The only function the nuclear reactor is expected to perform is to make heat energy available for generating steam under pressure and thereby to turn the turbines connected to the generators. When it is necessary, as a routine, to continuously cool off the reactor, it proves that excessive heat energy which is not controlled in its generation stage is there all the time. That is the element of risk, when an earthquake/tsunami etc. strike. Can we CONTROL creating heat energy that is actually required and does not need to be cooled off.

Yes sir. Every disaster proves to be a golden opportunity for Indian govt./business/self serving people for making money. Nothing is safe and strong enough to withstand an earthquake and tsunami. Let us not fool ourselves into any false belief that our finite human technology is good enough for us.

No Nuclear Plant in BIHAR, UP...
These states are and now becoming the chief grain producing states of INDIA and no potentially hazard industry should be set up which continuously threatens FARMING!!!! (Cultivation of Rice and Wheat chiefly)

Human's materalist conquest, greed has surpassed its record level in the known HISTORY of HUMAN EXISTENCE!!!!!!!!!!

We, Humans should brace ourself to face such enormous threats in future also (if we continue to behave greedily)

We in today's world give our CHILDREN the best toys, foods, play stations, best schooling, best and brandes clothes BUT BUT BUT BUT are in process to hand over the WORST WORST ENVIRONMENT!!!!!!!

The worst nuclear accident as on date was the Chernoby disaster which occurred in 1986 in Ukraine. That accident killed 56 people directly, and caused an estimated 4,000 additional cases of fatal cancer, as well as damaging approximately $7 billion of property.
Japan knows how to come out from any disaster and they will DO IT...
