MANU LAVANIA
mother of all deals
by MANU LAVANIA on May 01, 2011 11:56 AM

There is no doubt that for fighter jet the US technology is the best. Far superior to any other technology available in the world. We have rejected this technology on technical grounds? I will laugh at this. The reality is that the American comapines will not pay bribes to our leadeers who are making decision on this bid. The companies who have been selected for this job can do it easily without breaking laws for their countries. One big reason for why Amercian comapies are not so successful to grab orders in India is that as per USA law they can not pay bribes.Due to this we do not have much of US technology in Power, defence and other industries.

Believe me, its nothing to do with Indian Air force interests.History shows Govt doesnt care for IAF-pilots.This deal is only to siphon of money to Italy.
Can we ask Govt , how we never realised how technically adv are we when we did deal with Russia for so many years.

I won't comment on how much the Govt cares for IAF pilots , but the fighters they have selected do appear superior to the US planes . The US planes are merely overhauled versions of a 25 year old plane . The Russian planes are also new but more expensive . In recent airshows including the one in Bangalore , the Rafale and Eurofighters outperformed the others and IAF pilots seemed keen on either of them . Obviously instead of choosing between them , the Govt decided to split the deal , which in a way is sensible as we don't have to depend only on one supplier . As for the Govt not realising how technically advanced we are , India did not become advanced overnight . We built up our capabilities over the years with friendly ties and technology transfers from Russia . The present Russian govt is however less responsive to Indian needs and so we need to look beyond them.

They haven't split the deal. Rafale and Eurofighter are in the race for commercial negotiations. All others are rejected for technical reasons.

Eventually one of Eurofighter or Rafale will be selected and all 126 fighters will be either Eurofighter or Rafale.

Eurofighter is the most sophisticated air-superiority fighter followed closely by Rafale. It now comes down to cost.

F-16 was probably the last ranked. Gripen didn't fit the requirements being single-engined and Mig 35 is still in design phase. It is only an enhancement of Mig29.

FA-18 Super Hornet of USA was the only American fighter that could be considered, but it is an old plane - almost 25 years old design. Even with upgrades it cannot match Eurofighter and Rafale which are < 5-10 years old.

So the choice was right. I hope we pick the Eurofighter but won't be disappointed with Rafale either because French are the least likely to impose sanctions anytime in future.

True Indian,
What you said is right but represents only one side of the coin. The MiG's which have crashed were Made in India ones where material and other quality factors were sacrificed just to produce more number of planes by HAL. The original Soviet made MiG is much superior to our manufactured ones.

Also, please note that inspite of better technology by the americans, they will not share the best ones with us.

Sonia being one of the deciding person in Govt of India, the award was surely decided for the Europeans. I still bet, the Russians are much better than the Euro ones.

Not true. Eurofighter and Rafale were far superior to F-16 and FA18-Superhornet.

USA no longer makes 4G or 4.5G fighters. They are now only making 5G fighters (stealth) namely F22 Raptor and F35. They don't sell this to anyone!

So you are right that US has best technology, but it was not on offer here in this deal.

why do USA wouldnot supply us 5G fighters if it thinks that India is its friend and strategic partner? What is wrong in it.We want such fighter jets which would give our force superiority on Pakistan and Chinese. But if they are pressurized by Pakistan and china not to give 5G planes it is their loss. Our country needs topmost fighter planes.

Posters' network identification
by lookisay on May 01, 2011 10:20 AM

Rediff is mentioning the "national Internet network" from where a poster is logging in the personal page of the poster.
My questions is, "how come many Pakistanis are posting from the Indian network?"
Does this mean that these pakistani infiltrators (sleeping agents) in the Indian soil?
People should have grave concern.

by ashish tiwari on May 01, 2011 07:15 AM

Yes USA need to be taught a lesson for their proxy-support of terrorism against India. for and playing a double game allowing pakistan to acquire atomic weapons by stealth and arming it to teeth with F-16s, PC3s Orions, and other weapons.

'Life of the IAF pilot is more important than ties' NO doubt
by Tina on May 01, 2011 01:55 AM  | Hide replies

It is so refreshing to see a diplomatic keeping facts straight after a very long time some one said made Indians proud.
see USAF record even they have not ordered F16 and F18 for there own airforce because these are Outdated Technology. In fact USAF is now deciding to Retire there F18 squadrons and undated them with F22 Raptors
if USA is so interested in ties why have the not offered F22 raptors
USA cant be trusted as if India gets F16 or F18 they will never be trusted with parts and support afterwards and will compel India to sign some trade , nuclear , or any treaty which is clearly not good for India
Extremely good move by India and USA should now see that there world dominance is getting over.
